Is 8.9 lbs a normal weight for a 5 month old kitten?

This is Tesla a Norwegian Forest cat mix, he is 5 months (almost 6 months) old. He was born October 12th, 2015.

I weighed him yesterday when I was buying flea treatment for our cats (one of them brought them home from the vet). I used the 'weigh yourself and then weigh yourself holding the cat' method. And I was so shocked by his weight the first time that I recalibrated the scale and tried again and got the same result! 8.9 pounds!

And he isn't fat, he's really quite lean and he still looks quite a bit smaller than my female Mainecoon mix (who is only 9.7 pounds and is very lean). I'm hoping he's just big for his age. Any thoughts ?

He looks like he's at a healthy weight to me. Norwegian forest cats are big cats, so he's probably going to be a large adult. There's a really loose way to estimate age/weight for kittens where age in months = weight in pounds, and while that may be the average there is a LOT of variation depending on breed and individual cats. I would not be worried.

Tesla sure is a cutie! I love that last pic with the head tilt.

Looks to be! He looks quite handsome and healthy. Thank you for giving him a home! I've got a big boy too - big paws, big everything. Love 'em! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

(Yes, it's healthy. He looks to have a big frame. He may end up 12-15 pounds!)

He looks so handsome! I had a Norwegian forest cat when I was a child! Funny story, we got him from someone who found him and thought he was 5 months old and our vet told us he was only 8 or 9 weeks!

He grew up to be a MASSIVE boy! 26lbs! That was before he got fat! He lived a long happy life, and bullied our dog growing up ;)

Yeah, this thread is about a month and half old. He's gotten even bigger since then haha. He's at least 10-11 pounds now. And he's only 7 months old.

And he's not fat either! But he is very fluffy :)

We also had a cat that was 26 pounds at his heaviest. He was a MASSIVE cat. Super long fur too. We had to shave him in the summer and his fur alone probably weighed 5lbs.

We're not for sure what breed he was. We were thinking he had some Mainecoon in him because he was just HUGE.

Wow - gorgeous!
Yep, he sure is a pretty boy :)

He's very smart too. He's been playing fetch since he was about 7 or 8 weeks old. Its funny, the little stuffed bird he fetches was as big as his head back then.

How big is he now?

He's 17 or 18 pounds now ! But I have a feeling he is done growing (maybe?). When He was at the vet in January, the vet praised us on his health and weight.

He actually got even fluffier if you can believe it!!

That's a beauty. They will grow for 2 years so probably not a lot more.
I was curious as I have two Maine Coon Kittens which are only 4.5 months old. The female is 6.9 lbs. The male is 9.25 lbs. and 35 inches. Huge bones and paws.
