Hi all,
I discovered a growth on my Oliver's tail this morning and it has me concerned. It's a little smaller than a raisin and is about 2" from the base of his tail. Doesn't seem to bother him. It isn't firmly attached, almost sitting on the surface. At first I thought he had something stuck in his tail. The base of it is reddish/ purple and the head is blackish. Oliver is 15 years old. If anyone has seen anything like this I would appreciate any input.

Here's another picture of my Ollie sitting pretty :rub: .

Ollie is indeed very pretty!
It sounds like a skin tag or mole? Something like developing randomly on your cat is cause for concern IMO. I would have a vet check it out. Hopefully it should be easy enough to remove.
My cats have patches of darker skin here and there on their bodies, but they've had them all their lives and it's normal. If they were to develop a raised patch, I'd get it checked out.

Did you figure out what was wrong? My 14yr old cat has this same thing near the base of his tail. He has an appointment with the vet for yearly check up next week, but wondering if I need to take him in sooner.

P princegeorgethecat , 2 2catsandadog doesn't seem to have been on site for several months so might not see your question. Hopefully someone who has seen a similar type of thing will see this thread and offer some further information.

I agree with the advice that pushylady offered to 2catsandadog last year - if you are seeing a change in your cat's skin which looks like a mole or skin tag it is always best to take your cat along to a vet so they can examine it closely and take tests if they think it is necessary.

I took him to the vet yesterday and she said that it was just a skin tag, which most cats will develop as they age. She said there's nothing to be worried about, but that I should keep an eye on it and bring him back in if it changes.

She also told me to try not to draw too much attention to it, otherwise my cat might notice it and start biting at it, which could lead to infection.

That is reassuring news. Thank you for posting the update.

One of my previous cats developed little skin tags on the back of her neck as she got older and they never caused any problems. Good idea not drawing attention to the area through - at least with the back of the neck it was a harder area for my cat to bother.
