He doesn't sound underweight. All cats are different shapes and builds so it's hard to say exactly what weight an 8 month old cat should be. As a general rule you can tell how healthy a cat is by looking at how thick and shiny his coat is and how bright his eyes are.

If his ribs and spine are well covered and he doesn't have hollow flanks when you look down on him from above he probably isn't under weight.

Maine Coons are large cats, but they don't reach their full size and weight until they're about two years old.

Could you post a picture of him?

Gosh, he's just so handsome.

He looks like a good weight to me.  I know it's hard to tell with all that fur but he appears to be sized nicely.

Norachan is correct that MC's don't reach their full size until a couple of years so he has plenty of growing to do.  If you're concerned about his eating habits maybe try switching what you're feeding him - trying different textures or flavors. He just might not be all that into what he's currently eating.

FYI - I love this breed.  My partner and I most probably will look into getting one down the road.
