Another question from a Facebook debate I was just reading. Two parter.

Do you cut your sandwiches straight across or diagonal?

I never really use loaves of breads to make a sandwich. I use rolls, so no real answer. I guess when I do have an odd-shaped bred I cut straight across.

So for the next question, what type of bread do you normally use to make a sandwich?

Straight. What am I? A kid?

Our go to bread is Pepperidge Farm thin sliced white sandwich bread. Not only good for sandwiches but other things like grilled cheese or French toast.

The white keeps fresh longest.  We almost never go through a whole loaf in a week because we're both out of the house most of the time.  We prefer what's called Miche, sort of a blend of whole wheat, rye and white w/a bit of a sourdough taste.  I get that at Wegman's - I've never seen it elsewhere.  Great for all kinds of sandwiches.  It goes bad fast but we're able to get 1/2 loaves of it.  It wouldn't keep well for an entire week at all and while I will freeze a bagel I just haven't found sliced bread fares as well once frozen.

It also depends on what is being eaten. I mean you can't make a corned beef on anything but rye!

I don't usually cut the sandwiche. If I do its an + pattern.

As far as bread-

It depends on what I want. This week its Rye bread and a roll of garlic french bread. If I am making french toast its plain white bread. I normally like those 12 grain breads but lately gettin bored with it. I also like regular plain wheat bread for toast. Or pumpernickle bread if we have tuna fish. So many choices now!

I much prefer rolls to bread, so usually any sandwiches are on some type of roll. Germany is renowned for its variety of bread/rolls, so there's not a particular type I usually eat, though it's almost never white bread.

Sometimes I cut sandwiches on a diagonal, sometimes straight across. If I'm making them for kids, I cut them diagonally and make "butterflies" out of two quarters, something my mom did when we were kids.

I prefer rolls but often I only have bread usually some type of whole grain.  I cut them diagonally.  The only time I get white bread is for grilled cheese, I think that is a childhood comfort thing.

When we were stationed in Germany they had these wonderful rolls for breakfast called Brotchen.  Even all these years later I remember those.  The traditional weekday breakfast was those with butter, no margarine, and coffee.

We use regular breads for sandwiches. I cut them diagonal for myself. Husband prefers his uncut.

i almost always make my own bread, in my bread machine. i usually make either white bread, or the white bread recipe with 1/2 cup of the white bread flour replaced with some wonderful 7-grain flour. i started making my own bread because, like @sivyaleah, i've found that bread that's been frozen just doesn't have the taste or texture i prefer.

sometimes i don't slice my sandwich, but most times i cut them into 'fingers' -- cut the sandwich in half crossways, then each half into 4 'fingers'. the 'fingers' are the perfect size to easily pop into my mouth.

I usually eat sandwiches on rolls too. I get them from the bakery section at the grocery store. I love the 5 grain ones and the sesame seed ones. If I was to make a sandwich on sliced bread, I'd cut it straight.

It depends on the kind of sandwich!  If it's good for dipping (like grilled cheese with tomato soup) I cut diagonal.  If it's just for eating I cut down the middle.  My kids like theirs cut down the middle only.  I cut DS's on the diagonal once recently and he let me know that was not appreciated.  (He's 3.  I told him to eat it anyway.
)

I usually get some sort of wheat bread.  We go through a lot of bread here so I usually get the big loaf kind.  But sometimes I buy a loaf of rye or sourdough for sandwiches.  Or a good multigrain.  But that's normally for DH and I.

We love ciabatta rolls for sandwiches, but pretty much any roll will do. Rolls more so than bread, although Rick will make a sandwich out of one slice of bread for his lunch, when he takes sandwiches (he doesn't that often anymore).

It's pretty much whole wheat around here most of the time. I like rye or pumpernickel, too, but Rick is not a big fan. Rick is a big potato bread fan, preferably with the onions.

OH boy.  Do not laugh at me.  All right, laugh, BUT I WILL TAKE NAMES!!!

This is my sandwich roster, and all "cuts" are diagonal (easier for me to attack with the dentures, the bread doesn't stick behind front toofs as badly)

Roast Beef (with cheddar) on pumpernickle

Chicken or Turkey (with Mozzarella) on whole wheat or seven grain

Ham or Pastrami (with Swiss) on rye

ALL salads, tuna, chicken, or ham, on croissant.

Why would I laugh? Most of them sound pretty good. :lol3:

These all sound good. Something about pumpernickle and roast beef..yum. and ham on rye.

I thought I was the only one who only puts certian meats on certain breads :)

I always thought it was standard to use different breads for different fillings.  As much as I like dark rye/pumpernickle, it  just doesn't go with tuna salad or PBJ.    Dark rye/pumpernickle calls for roast beef (my preferred cheese is provolone, though).

Ham and Swiss go well on light rye

My garden variety sandwich bread is whole wheat or 7 grain, depending on my mood at the time I'm in the store.

Usually, I don't cut the sandwich at all, unless it's kind of messy (like a Reuben) and I need to--that'll usually be a diagonal cut if I do.

I'd eat at that sandwich shop!
My MIL lives in this old, quaint little town. They have lots of cafe and artsy shops and some fun antique stores.  Some don't last for long; but there is one cafe that makes the best sandwiches!  Another little cafe did so well they had to move to a bigger location; away from that downtown strip!  (And now I want their chicken salad on a croissant!  Or the Reuben from the first cafe.
Their pickles are really good too.  They might be homemade.

Your right; certain breads for certain fillings.  I tend to just buy something that works with just about anything. But sometimes I need to get the right bread to really hit the spot with whatever kind of sandwich I'm craving.

I might have to make some home-made reubens this week.  Good thing I haven't been grocery shopping yet.

Well, don't I feel all justified?  Most of my IRL friends think I'm a little OCD about sandwiches, and I'm not so bad that I won't eat what is given to me if I'm out and about.  But we're talking BEST CASE here.  Apparently, my IRL friends don't know what's good, and my TCS friends do.

Every day I become more convinced that we should all chip in and just buy a small town to live in.  We'd disagree on a lot of things, but the Community Wide Potluck Suppers would be AMAZING, and we'd be the only town in history that actually ENFORCED felony charges on any animal abuse.  There would be no stray kitties, no unwanted kitties...or dogs, either.

Cajun turkey...YUM...I bet that would be outstanding on sourdough!  I know for a fact that avocado and tomato sandwiches are good on it.
