So, my Hazel started off not messing with her incision too much. She was spayed Tuesday, is on an antibiotic as much as I can give it to her (she won't eat it in her food) and today I noticed yet incision was a little crusty/bleedy. She has been extremely loving today, but I want to make sure her incision is doing okay. Pictures are posted. Please let me know!

Looks good to me!

Are the antibiotics liquid or in pill form? If liquid, if you squirt it in the side of her mouth it's a little easier. If pills, stick them way in the back of her throat, then stroke her neck to make her swallow.

Her incision is looking really good!  We use cheese to hide pills for my kitties.  They're so excited about the cheese, the don't even notice the pill is in there.

I think I am more stressed about this whole thing than maybe I should be. I showed the picture to another vet, who suggested I bring her in just to have her incision really looked at, and there's no infection. They sent me home with an e-collar and told me if it gets red or seepy, call the vet that did the surgery on Monday. Hazel absolutely refuses to wear the collar, and she's trying to lick at her incision more and more now. I really worry about her licking too much and causing more bleeding or opening an actual area.

I bought a baby onesie and tried that too, but I ended up getting the wrong size and she had no problems wiggling out of it. I'm supposed to go on vacation next Saturday until the following Monday, and I'm worrying like crazy that I won't be able to go, or worse - that she'll open up her wound while no one is home or watching her. I should have waited until I came home from vacation to get her fixed but she was so loud this last cycle that I couldn't take it anymore, and she wasn't eating or sleeping because she was constantly meowing. Poor girl!

If you're not going away until next Saturday, she should be almost entirely healed by then. External healing should only take about 10 days. So you won't have to worry about her stitches while you're gone. Even if she pulls them out then, nothing bad will happen.

It looks good to me, too. I don't think she will open it, and since she's on antibiotics, it's unlikely to get infected. I'm of the old-fashioned belief that licking is okay; it does keep the wound clean. You should be able to go on your trip.

Thanks everyone, it's been a real help being on here. I'm closely monitoring her incision still and there's no bleeding or oozing, and no swelling.

I have another question, though. I was told by my step mom that when they had their cat spayed about seven years ago, they put Listerine around the incision area to keep her from licking it. Is that even a remotely good idea to do?

And, Happy Easter to everyone too!

Nope, definitely don't put Listerine on your cat!  You should never use anything for humans on your cat without talking to your vet, but Listerine has all kinds of chemicals that I wouldn't want on my cat.  And even if she doesn't lick it, it will absorb through her skin.

I think it's healing nicely and she'll be fine while you're away.

I have been scouring the web about spay incisions since she was fixed on Tuesday. Today is day 5 and my worry comes and goes lol. She does have on the side the stitches aren't on, a red line going down her incision. I don't want to bug anyone with more pictures than I need to, but does this sound like the surgical glue having come undone? I'll post pictures of anyone thinks it sounds funny/strange.

It needs to heal they heal fast, do whatever the vet instructed you to do, putting her in crate helps to keep her quiet offer moist food. You just had her checked so if you can prevent her from licking picking with no e collar for a few days you should be fine. I've seen a red line, it all just healed. Fur takes awhile to grow back in...

She won't go for the crate or the cone of shame, so those are both out. Here are two pictures. Please let me know your thoughts. The red side is the side that doesn't have the stitches.

She is eating, drinking, going to the box and acting normal.
