Hi!

I have a 1 year old, 10 lb black, white, gray tabby. He's on a grain-free dry food from 'Ideal Balance'. The last few weeks i've noticed that he has lighter sections in his poop. He acts completely normal and is still high-energy. We took him to the vet and they did a stool test and didn't find any parasites. She said he seemed fine and his poop looks fine, but I'm just not sure. Should I get a second opinion. Anyone else experience 2 colors in their cats poop? It's still well-formed. Not runny or anything. Just a little lighter in parts. Thanks! No recent food changes either.

Just fyi. He was on an antibiotic about a month ago... I don't know if that makes any difference. And he still has a bowel movement about every 24 hours. Thought they aren't much.. but I read grain-free cat diets produce less poop.

Anyone? Just a yes or no would be good. I'm considering switching him to a wet food diet after doing some research.

I've never heard of a problem associated with two-toned poop like that. Most issues relate to how firm or soft it is, or if it contains blood, worms or foreign objects. Odor is another favorite discussion point.  I don't think it's a symptom of any serious health issue especially since your vet has given him a clean bill of health.

Did this start around the time he was on the antibiotic?  If so, you might want to try giving him a probiotic since antibiotics can throw off the populations of normal bacteria necessary for healthy digestion.  Here's a thread that discusses some of the ones on the market.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/281470/which-probiotics-are-best   My vet always recommended fortiflora so that's the one I use.

The other possibility is that the food manufacturer may have made a change in formulation - sometimes that affects the appearance of poop.

You're right about canned or raw food being generally better for cats than kibble.  There is a lot of information available on this site and you can always post questions in the Nutrition forum as you develop a new diet for your boy.

Since he's doing so well,  I don't think you need to seek a second opinion.  See how things change with the addition of a probiotic or a change in diet.  Of course if he does develop any symptoms you should take him right in but as it stands now, I think you're safe just watching him.
