Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has experience with wet cat food that doesn't result in really smelly poo. we have a new little cat who has just turned a year old and we've been giving him Nature's Menu, which he absolutely adores! We've only had him about 4 weeks now and his previous owner was giving him the regular supermarket brands of whatever was on sale. We started him on Nature's Menu because it seemed to be so much better quality for him, but we're wondering if it's a bit too rich for his little tummy. He has some solid poos but also some sloppy ones and the smell is eye watering to put it mildly! He's fine, fit and healthy otherwise and has been to the vet for initial check ups and all, so no problems other than this. Has anyone had any experience with other foods that might be good for this? Thanks for taking the time to listen and help :- )

Could be that something in the new food is giving him gas.  Isn't that a raw food diet?  Perhaps his system wasn't ready for the change. What is good for one cat is not always good for another.

If he was fine on the supermarket food he was getting before, go back to that until his poops return to normal.  If they do NOT, then take him to the vet and get him checked out.  Maybe you got a bad batch of the new food, that wasn't handled correctly,  If he's fine on the old food but you want to transition him, try mixing the new food with the old food in very small amounts to start with and see how that goes.  It could be that this isn't the right food for him for some reason.  There was a discussion about that particular brand awhile back and I will give you the link.  You can Private Message any of those people or do your own searches about that food.

Thanks so much for that idea - we'll try mixing some of the new with the old and see how we get on. Interesting you should mention him having a bit of gas as we have noticed that a few times, so very likely it's just a bit too much too soon for him. We'll definitely check out that web site so thanks for passing it along. We've been giving him the pouches of food, not the raw stuff. I know a lot of people like that idea but we aren't sold on it yet. Thanks so much for your thoughts - it really has helped a lot. Appreciate it!

Yes to the possibility of gas! One of our cats had horribly smelly gas when we first adopted her: it stopped after we took all the dry food and potato out of her diet. Those Nature's Menu pouches sound like very good food without any of the carby fillers I often suspect of causing problems (potato and peas) but cats' stomachs can be pretty sensitive. I always wonder about those berries so many companies like to put in their foods!

And I couldn't agree more with the suggestion of going back to the last successful food and then slowly trying new foods again after he's stabilized.

Good luck! It's no fun having a smelly cat.

I'd also consider adding a probiotic. It helps with digestion and it's just good for them overall. This is the one that I give my cats

Thanks for the help and advice. It's always nice to hear what someone else has experienced and what worked for them. Our little smelly boy is now off the good eats and back on the cheap stuff for a few weeks and we'll see if that calms his little belly down a bit. I bought some tiny little containers today and we'll try him with a small spoon at a time of the good food and I can freezer the rest of the pack and take it out as needed. He did give me a funny look when he got fed tonight, along the lines of "I was dining at Jamie Oliver's and now I get Burger King??" Hopefully it works, even though it seems to be the exact opposite to what should be good for him! We'll try to transition it very slowly and fingers crossed (and nose unplugged!). Thanks for taking the time to help :- )
