My persian cat has been shedding excessively to the point where my mom is threatening to have her dumped.is there anyway to lessen it? Some medicine, some home remedy? I brush her everyday. I bathe her every week or one and a half week.

She's absolutely gorgeous!

Hmm aside from brushing the only thing I can think of is a lion cut. That will cut done on shedding a lot, plus it's pretty adorable. I'd take her to a groomer to do it, my kitty had to be shaved due to a skin infection and the vet did it for about $50 so I would assume it would cost around that at a groomers.

You may be bathing too much, I almost never bathe my cats, they are self cleaning, unlike dogs who can smell Excessive bathing could dry out the skin and fur and cause excessive shedding. I have seen an oral product on the shelf in pet sections and on the Internet that stop shedding, but have done no research on it to see if it is safe. A call to your vet might be in order when you find out what is in it, as far as I can see it's vitamins and minerals for the coat and skin. It says it promotes a burst of normal seasonal shedding and stops the shedding in between, more like outside cats do that are exposed to the seasonal changes in temperature. Inside cats tend to shed all year round. Other then that, a 'Furminator' works very well, they are a little pricey but really take the excess fur out, I use one all the time. They have them for long haired cats. If you have hardwood floors I highly recommend the power edge pet vacuum from Bissell, it has a 'V' shaped head and the suction is unbelievable, it pulls hair from BEHIND things on the floor, I absolutely love it and it makes my life a lot easier. I hope you find a solution, I have three cats in the house and the amount of hair is unbelievable! Good luck!

Thanks for your reply I didnt know there was an oral medicine or about the furminator but I doubt they will be available here in pakistan. Im gonma search for them online though. Is it shedding season these days? She didnt shed so much before maybe its seasonal. Id reduce bathing but she also starts stinking. :(

Why does your cat stink? Most cats completely clean themselves?

It sounds to me like there could be a health issue.

I can maybe answer that, Certain breeds, like the Siamese, have certain 'odors' about them, My flame point, Casper, definitely would qualify, and I have noticed that about other breeds too. Their coats are usually more coarse too. My other cats have no odor at all. It f your cat has been checked by a vet lately, I'm sure it may be a breed problem, but if not  wouldn't hurt to check.

Maliha if your cat is healthy and has been seen my a vet then I would assume she is healthy and it's not a skin issue. I think most living things have a smell, it may or may not be a bad smelling depending upon who you ask, but a smell nonetheless. I also understand the Persian cats are a breed that require semi-frequent bathing so I don't think you're bathing her to much either.

However, they are a breed of cat that is notorious for being very high maintenance. She is a a breed of cat that will likely always shed a lot, and the change in season will only add to that. Your mother doesn't sound very understanding of the type of cat you have, so I don't think small reductions in shedding will make her happy - I know they wouldn't have appeased my mother either. I think shaving her really is your best bet to keeping your mother happy by the vast reduction in the amount of hair she can shed.

It's unfortunate you don't have any groomers nearby, do you have a local vet? They would probably be willing to do it? If not, you may have to do it yourself which sounds intimidating but if she is comfortable with handling and bathing you should be able to manage. You will need a set of clippers but they can be purchased at almost any store. I would recommend watching YouTube video's to associate yourself with the process and going slowly. Here's a video I found quickly:

Good luck!
