Dose anyone know which one is better for FHV eye ulcers? Vira-A or Cidofovir?

Which one is less toxic? and which one is more effective?

Thank you very much.

Our vets finally gave up on my old cat and don't have further opinions.

But I will never give up! I'd like to switch any topical medication, and give it a try.

There are dendritic things in his eyes. And he caught cold in winter, like I've mentioned before.

But I'm not sure, if it's dendritic ulcers or pseudodendritic ulcers.  Our vets don't know neither. They seems to know nothing!

Can C felis or mycoplasma cause pseudodendritic ulcers too?

We've tried Ganciclovir and he's on oral famciclovir too.

Have you been to a Feline Opthamologist?  If your Vet doesn't know much about these things, it sounds like you need a specialist.

I'm not familiar with either of these meds, sorry.

Yeah, the Chinese feline ophthalmologist. And I call several new vets today.and I even called hospital for human to see if I can get this 2 kind of medications. It seems I can't get them.the vet says if it's FHV, ganciclovir will work. But it doesn't work well on us. I don't know what to do. I don't want to give up. The day before yesterday I still hesitate between go for a dye test or not. But before I can make a dicision, our vets gave up. Of course I can do that test elsewhere, but they don't have other medications. We already visited the best Clinique for animals in our country. Can the virus stop itself? Some ulcers seems to be better with some medications we were on, but in the mean time, others in the middle keep growing! does anyone have any experience for 2 months chronic eye ulcers, due to chronic respiration problems? The ulcers are on and never off, what shall I do?

OK, I did a little research, and Cidofovir is what the University of Cornell recommends.  Here is there website on it:  http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/Health_Information/cornealulcers.cfm

Are you also giving your guy L-Lysine?  Most folks here give their cats with FHV a dose of L-Lysine twice a day.  Here's a thread that might be helpful on THAT:

AND, if that doesn't work, several people are adding Lactoferrin to the L-Lysine.  Here's another thread that discusses that option:

Thank you @mrsgreenjeens

I also read on line that we can use cidofovir and Vira-A on cats.

They have toxity but when ganciclovir doesn't work, it can be a choice.

New problem is I can't get them, already called pharmacies and the best eye hospital for human and several animal clinique.

And I can't be sure it's virus neither. It's definitely dendritic or pseudodendritic, but it seems to have many causes.

Like virus, ameba, corneal toxity due to drops... I didn't figure it out yet.

Yesterday we went to see a vet, it a wrong decision. I was hot last night and stressful and tired.

It's for the dye test, and our vet made it in different way this time.

1st time: drop, watch, rinse

2nd time: drop, rinse, watch

you see the difference? and then she said the ulcers are gone. we went to the clinique for nothing.

my cat still squints, one eye bigger than the other, with swollen eyelid, and try to avoid sunlight, +nasal discharge+eye discharge

the white things are still there, the veins are still red, and the biggest ulcer is sunken.

Do they believe that one will go to hell, if he did the evil thing?!

And for Lysine, yes, he was on it for 1 month as I remember, didn't seem to work well, and he's losing weight.

So I stopped it for now, since he's on antiviral meds too, although two other bottles of lysine are still on their road to us. There are 2 bottles at home now.

And for the lactoferrin, the chinese one made him throw up twice, so stopped trying that too, and we are waiting for another bottle shipping from usa with the lysine. I'd like to try that.

Thank you very much, I still try to find a way to help him.

I will never give up on him. All replys are welcomed

What I still need to figure out now, its

1: can scar keep growing? and became bigger and bigger?

2: what is like the cornea damaged by toxity of medications?

3: How long to see a topical medication works?

4: For topical meds like ganciclovir gel and erythromycin ointment, we can't exceed how many days of usage, like 3 weeks?

5:  when do we see the red veins regress? like right after the ulcers are gone, or several days after that?

6: How many days did your cat use to heal the chronic eye ulcers? Yeah, especially chronic and not during a out break.

7: Can a eye ulcer caused by virus stop itself?

And still a lot of other questions, in short, anything about feline eye ulcers and keratitis, or respiration problems.

The details may be the cure for us. like the dosage, your cat's weight, how the cornea is like, and so on, or any vet you know like to help us.

Thank you greenjeens, thank you for what you did for us! we are grateful. And thanks for all the opinions, stories and helps.

My vet opthalmo prescribed famvir and cidofovir last Saturday for my cat's corneal ulcers. I can describe the results if you're interested.
