I just watched my elderly cat in the litter box. She had two urinary infections in the past year due to kidney stones. I have her on mineral water (homemade calcium chloride and magnesium formula) for several months and I've been trying to catch a sample to check her urine ph. I haven' t seen her urinate in a while. Anyway, she seemed to struggle to get it out. Not crouching and peeing bits like when she had the infections, but upright and shaking and forcing 4 spurting streams across the litter box. The total output was about 1/4 cup. Does this sound like an infection?

When my elderly cat started standing up while peeing, it was because he had arthritis and it apparently hurt to squat.  Is your girl having a difficult time jumping onto the bed or couch or showing any other signs of pain?  It might be a good idea to take her to the vet for a check-up.  If she has arthritis, there are medications and supplements she can take that will help.  You could have her checked for an infection at the same time.

Thanks. I hate to take her in but I guess I'll have to. She is deathly afraid to go to the vet and ends up urinating all over me, poor thing.

Well, I did consider joint pain, but then she still jumps up on the sink for water and doesn't seem to have a problem. I was able to observe her urinate again and this time normally. I grabbed a urine sample (she's so easy) and took it in. All good. Don't know why she had that episode. I'm paranoid because of her kidney stones.  When she had her last infection, she hardly showed signs and it got so bad she needed two rounds of antibiotics. Thanks for taking time to read and respond to my posts!
