Any pets I have had who needed surgery was told the night before to take up food/water after 12am. My kitty is have a few extractions on Friday and they told me it's ok for him to eat/drink. The reasoning they gave is there is a new study the blood sugars gets affected without eating. Still smh on that.

Also I was reading the paperwork for the estimate of his dental that included some of the medication being used. I do not want him on the convenia shot. I switched him over to tablets forget the name right now starts with a C.  The other med that concerned me was called Meloxicam - some of what I read scares me. Renal failure. I don't know if there are alternatives but will ask. Has anyone used that med before ?

I'm in a similar situation right now. My cat goes in Tuesday for surgery to remove two of her claws. I also told my vet no on the convenia since I don't like the idea of something that can't be taken back that a cat could have a bad reaction too.

I haven't heard of Meloxicam. They're giving my cat Metacam, which is an anti inflammatory/pain medication.

I have never heard of letting a cat eat and drink before surgery. My vet told me no food after 12am and no water after 6am.

My cat was given the convenia without me know what is really was.  After the shot he was very lethargic and sneezing his head off for a few days. Read about it and decided not to let him have this ever again.  Yesterday was the 14th day of convenia shot and I asked vet for tablets instead which they gave Clavamox.  I would just ask for something else. Pilling a cat is hard. You could try pill pockets. I had no luck with that. I got him to take the tablets by holding him on my lap on his back - give him a few treats then pop the pill in quickly. If I do it other way he locks his mouth so dang tight this seems to work for now =)

I think the metacam is the same as the Meloxicam. Again I am going to ask for something different.

Yeah I don't get the he can eat before surgery. From my understanding food is withheld in humans/pets who under go surgery so they do not vomit and aspirate and choke. I am not allowing him food after 12am.

I'm taking my other cat to the vet today for shots, so I will see if there is something that can be used instead. In general the number of pain items being given seems a bit crazy. If she doesn't have time to talk about it today, I will ask when I meet with her the day of surgery. I plan to print out the quote she gave me and will circle everything that I am concerned about.

I'm lucky with my cat. She will eat just about anything so pill pockets probably will work.

Artie had a dental almost a month ago.

He had to stop food at 11pm, but water was fine.

The Vet automatically gave him some clavamox tablets, twice a day for a week.

These have to be taken with food, because they can upset the tummy.

It did for Artie. They are also very bitter pills.

It did upset his tummy, although he has IBD. He was a bear to pill..

Not fighting but not wanting to open his little sore mouth.

He started spitting out the pills and then vomited. So I stopped them. The Vet agreed. He had 4 days doses...

After this ordeal, I was thinking of putting them in a gel capsule.. That would have been better...

Unfortunately, he needed to go back to the Vet for an inflamed extraction site. He was given a shot of penicillin, which did the trick..

I was very fortunate, I never had to discus the coven with the Vet.. Automatically prescribed the clavamox...no covenia used.

@NewYork1303  - I did the same thing you did with the print out of the estimate and circled all I was concerned about. There are pain medications that can be given as well as antibiotics. I called today and spoke to the nurse to about my concerns. I told her I was not comfortable with the meloxicam and asked for something else and they are going to do burprenex(sp??) which he has been on with no adverse reactions. Also the antibiotic I said no to the convenia and said I would like to keep him on the tablets I just picked up Clavamox.  I then again raised my concern with eating after midnight and she said the new studies indicate it helps from the cats blood sugars from dropping and I brought up well can't they aspirate and she said in cats it's a very low chance. I told her I would feel comfortable not feeding him she said she doesn't recommend withholding food and to let them know tomorrow morning what I choose so they know what they are dealing with.  So def talk to your vet  before the surgery and see what options are available. Thats great your kitty will take meds in the pill pockets. There is no fooling my boy hehe.

@artiesmom  - Artie sounds like my Rey not wanting to take his meds. I found if I placed him on my lap gave him a few treats , petted him it kept him calm and his mouth did not tighten up I was able to pop a pill in following a few treats. Pheww. Rey is missing his front leg and let me tell ya that other front leg is strong as heck!!!  The vet never even told me the Clavamox had to be taken with food. Rey seems to be tolerating it fine from what I can tell. Your poor baby with his upset tummy and a sore mouth and infection :( I hope he is doing better now!!!  Did you have to follow up with vet after the extractions and the stitches they used I would imagine they were dissoluble ?

I would assume that as long as the vets know what to expect then they will be ready for any problems that might accrue with blood sugar dropping or asphyxia. It makes sense that they would want to know what they were dealing with.

When does your cat have his surgery?

I'm not feeding him after midnight and will tell them tomorrow. Like I said I am not comfortable with the chance of him aspirating no matter what this new study shows. I'm sticking with what's been safe and proven. he has to be there tomorrow at 7:30am

Yes, I did have another follow-up with the Vet, a week later. Everything was fine. The extraction sites looked all normal..they were dissolvable stitches...he is eating some dry food now..although I do not think he ever chews it. He just swallows it whole.

Since i posted last things have got worse. All day Monday he was vomiting shortly after i gave the clavamox ( was given with food) Tuesday morning I bring him back in to address the vomiting and still not pooping (well he did just before we left) The vet looked him over. Said the extraction site looks good and that his belly doesn't feel hard from urine/poop. She think it could be the Clavamox causing the vomiting. She gave him a shot of a medication that stops the nausea. We discontinued the Clavamox and didn't see a need to switch to another antibiotic. We go home and he rested pretty much of the day and no getting sick. This morning I wake up to him getting sick again in a few spots. Called the vet and it took them awhile to get back with me - they suggested I use 1/2 a tablet of Pepcid AC for next few days. Also suggested Metamucil to help with his constipation (tried canned pumpkin - he doesn't like it by itself or mixed in food) She also suggested starting one teaspoon of greek yogurt to help build up the good bacteria. That he seems to enjoy. I just want my man to feel betters :(
