One of the things the viruses are doing is spoofing emails. I've been getting tons of emails from ISPs claiming I've sent out the virus (my machine is clean, I don't do viruses). I worked with my IT manager regarding this because it was downing my account and we found that even the ISP emails are being spoofed!!!! You're doing the right thing to delete these emails.

Also be wary of spyware. It's getting to be a big problem too. There's lots of stuff online. If anyone's interested in an online checker URL just CP me.

Just received it. Didn't open the attachment but this is the message in the body.

My anti-virus didn't even catch it. How bizarre.

Well, I contacted my ISP due to all these strange emails and have checked to make sure I didn't have the virus. (Whew! We're clean). I am not opening any emails at all with attachments at this time. I was and still am getting emails as mentioned above by others - by people I've never heard of. Apparently, these fiends grab your email address at random and start spreading the virus. Crazy.

Heidi,

The girls are doing really well. We did have another worm scare with Lucky, but we think we've got it licked now. Kitty, at 18, is starting to actually play with toys again...amazing. I'll get some updated pics up when I can.

It's unbelievable. I'm getting at least 10 per day. Haven't opened any either but it's really getting annoying.

Hope it ends soon.

I used to get those emails too! I didn't really pay attention to them b/c they were generally in the junk mail anyways, but sometimes it would be in the in box, and so once, after getting it like 10 times, I looked at it and it never said what the message was, (I assume it was in the attachment, along with who knows what else), so I just always deleted them.

I actually got two spoofed emails yesterday in relation to an email I sent one year ago.

I'm surprised My Doom virus has only recently made the headlines in USA. It made the headlines about a week before the Superbowl in Australia. Hmmm....

Anyhow, I saw the halftime show and it pretty much left me speechless. It was a live telecast I managed to watch during a break at wrok. That was all that I saw. Not a mad sports fan but I do try to watch it.

Sam,

The insidious nature of worms like MyDoom is such that, while a user's computer may have been unknowingly infected when the attachment was opened, it is not and may never be apparent to the user that the worm is there. Meanwhile it silently does its thing, sending itself out to individuals in the user's address book, repeating this exercise ad infinitum, replicating itself by the thousands, and then, on a preset schedule, the infected computers all launch a coordinated denial of service attack on the ultimate victim.

The ultimate intended victims of MyDoom appear to have been only SCO and Micro$oft. The former's web site was paralyzed by the attack and shut down; the latter was apparently capable of protecting itself, which it did.

So, if you were infected it is quite possible that "something bad" was indeed happening -- it may not have been happening to you, but it may have been happening to someone else without your knowledge.

I find it somewhat ironic that Micro$oft, the designer of the operating system infected because of a weakness in that system, did not move fast enough with a fix to save SCO, but did move fast enough to save itself.

Best regards,

Jim

Movin' on up!
They seem to have stopped. The only things, in that inbox, were my library notice and a Shepler's sale. I only use that e-mail addy for business-related stuff and it DOES get a lot of junk. I don't even look at the bulk mail.

I have a question. Does anyone use outlook express? As far as I can find, there is no way to delete an email without opening it. If anyone knows how, I would be interested to know.

Yip, I use outlook express. My email sever deletes all spam and suspect mails, so all is good. You need good software if you'e going to use Outlook express.

Hermione, you are right on one point. You cannot delete an email without selecting it in Outlook, so for the viruses that are run simply by selecting the email you don't really stand a chance.
However, with this particular virus, it is contained in an attachment, which doesn't have to be opened with the message. I've gotten probably 200+ messages at work containing this virus and I'm not infected because I didn't open it. This one was very easy to avoid, taking the common precautions of not opening attachments from people you don't know or with a message that looks suspicious.

There is a way to set your settings on Outlook Express, where all you read is the header and you don't have to open the email- in other wards you can delete it, without opening. I have my Outlook Express set that way, and don't have to open any emails I find suspect. I can't delete without opening.
