I did a search for this but couldn't find any posts. What exactly is the difference between the two? Is prednisone only prescribed for dogs & Prednisolone for cats? Please feel free to refererence any threads that have covered this -- thanks!
The following is for general background knowledge only, and NOT for self-medication.
Prednisone and Prednisolone are both synthetically produced corticosteroids (known as cortisones) that have anti-inflammatory properties. They have slightly different chemical structures. Prednisone is converted by the liver into Prednisolone.
They are used for a variety of issues where chronic or acute inflammation is involved. Prednisolone is more readily absorbed by the body and may have a slightly greater anti-inflammatory effect. It is considered the superior choice for cats.
Prednisone and Prednisolone have similar side effects as well, which can be serious with prolonged large doses, and also dosage has to be reduced gradually to avoid complications.
MOST IMPORTANT: Only a physician or veterinarian can decide which is appropriate for use and in what dosage.
