This food is horrible, it caused crystals to format in our cats bladder and ended in him falling over dead. The vet said it's because of all of the "byproducts" in the ingredients, so please beware so you don't have to grieve or watch your wife grieve like I'm doing!

This is one reason why it is better to feed a cat a diet of largely wet food, using dry to supplement or occasionally if you have to leave the cat for a day or so and wet might go bad. With most dry foods, the cat does not drink enough, even if you leave out plenty of water. And of course, the 'binders' and cereals in most dry food are not good for cats, they cannot digest them. This applies to most dry foods, not just the one you fed your cat. The old adage that dry food is good for the teeth is largely discredited.

I am very sorry for your loss.

As JennyR pointed out, cats require sufficient intake of water to protect their urinary system. Thus, my opinion is that dehydration is a more probable cause for the formation of crystals in the bladder than the specific composition of a particular brand of food.

I guess that ultimately, different cats react differently.  My gal's diet is mostly dry kibble.  She seems to have an ample thirst, as she frequents her water bowl throughout the day and thus far shows no problems in urinating.   For awhile I offered her canned wet food just a few times a week.  Lately I've fed her the wet stuff just about every day and I choose a formula that has minimal carbohydrate content.

I would say that "good quality" kibble doesn't contain by-products. The trouble is unless you do your research its hard to know what is really good kibble or not. IMO there are only a handful of good quality kibbles out there. But, kibble should really only be a snack for cats. They need wet or raw food to stay hydrated.

Sorry for your loss :(
