Hi

My boy Mithra, now 3 years old, has been diagnosed with asthma.  He got down to 2.5mgs every 3 days.  Took him to the vet today as he's had a few asthma attacks in the last month.  He's been bumped back to 2.5mgs every day so we're starting from scratch.  I have researched tips on helping reduce attacks but am struggling to find products that might help.

I'm really curious about inhalers and have spoken to my vet, she agrees they are ideal compared to oral steroids.  She advised me to look for an online pharmacy such as a Canadian pharmacy which is cheaper.  I am curious if anyone knows of a good source for this as the online US pharmacies are really pricey up to like $400, no idea why the discrepancy.

1.  Any idea where people buy cheap Flovent(?) inhalers?  My vet said 220mg is ideal for him.  A few websites listed like $35, but my vet said this is suspiciously cheap.

2.  Have you used any products that reduce allergens or foods to avoid?

Thanks a lot for your time and thanks in advance!

Mithra says thank you!  :}

The Feline Asthma Yahoo G roup is a great resouce: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/felineasthma/info

Many peole there buy Flovent or the generic equivalent from an online pharmacy: https://www.inhousepharmacy.vu/default.aspx? It used to be called 4 Corners Pharmacy but changed the name.

Here's a TCS thread on where to buy Flovent for cheap: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/315193/any-advice-for-finding-best-prices-on-asthma-meds

You'll need the AeroKat device in order to give the Flovent properly.

I think the $35 is per dose or something. Some web sites list the price really weird, like price per dose instead of the cost for the entire bottle or inahler or whatever the product comes in. GoodRx.com is one good place to get approximate actual cost you will pay for the medicine. It looks like Floven 220 mcg is roughly $330 in my area. That's up over $100 from when I had my previous cat who had asthma and diabetes.

Keeping the house clean by dusting and vacuuming will help. Using a humidifier in the winter months also helps. Some people buy an air purifier, either a room sized one or a whole house one, to keep the air as clean as possible.

Thanks!  I will take a look at all those links.  Been thinking about a purifier but there are so many to choose from and some are really pricey before I've even bought the inhaler.  :}

This kitty is a semi-feral (well still feral with everyone else) and likes being under the bed where it's dusty!  I'm sure that doesn't help.

You can try wiping the kitty down with a damp cloth to get  the dust off the fur.  It will keep the kitty from breathing it in all night/day when he sleeps.

My son had asthma when he was very young and some tricks were rinsing pollen out of his hair before going to bed and not driving with car windows open.

Hi AmyRose=Nothing to add other than my cat is on flovent 250mcg 2 puffs am and 2 puffs pm. She gets cranky on the pred. We had to give pred last winter when she got some trouble breathing after my bf cleaned dust off the kitchen cabinets and didnt lock kitty in another room-that was scary. also have the vet give a script for albuterol=rescue inhaler for coughing-you give the albuterol if he has attacks. it doesnt stop airway inflammation but helps open those passages..once you get the flovent and inhaler=you can give a puff of albuterol before you give the flovent-helps open things better so the flovent gets deeper into the chest...feel free to ask away..
