my cat has FIV. he is 2 years old and we found him one day outside. I've heard that sometimes it doesn't even affect the cat, but I want to hear from someone who's had a cat or had a cat with FIV. did you cat show symptoms? did it pass early on? what should I do exactly to keep him healthy, meaning, what are the best medicines or supplements you guys have used to keep your kitty in check?

The best thing you can do is make him an inside cat, give him all shots, flea/mites/worms treatments to reduce his stress. He might overcome FIV or do well with it if these needs are met. Also, feed a high quality food!

I currently have an FIV positive 5 year old. I get her blood work done whenever we go to the vet to make sure she's healthy, and she is so far! I feed high quality, low carb canned food and probiotics (and a little added fiber because of her constipation issues, which are likely not related to FIV). Keeping stress low and keeping your cat indoors will also be good for his health, although I have started taking mine out on a harness and leash. I just make sure she doesn't try to eat anything and I wipe down her paws when we come in in case she stepped in anything.

This thread contains all of the supplements one user is giving her FIV positive cat: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/259351/how-i-am-treating-chumleys-fiv

It's a bit dense to wade through all of that information, but Lactoferrin seems to be the most beneficial supplement on that list and I'm considering starting giving it to my cat.

I've also started learning more about vaccines and I think I'm going to hold off next time she's "due" based on the guidelines here: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines

Thank you for taking care of this cat!
