No, Windows 10 has a new browser, Edge. I didn't use it; I immediately set the default to Chrome, which I've been using for some time.

I have Windows 10 and Internet Explorer 11 with a date of 2015, so I presume it downloaded with Windows 10.  I had been using Mozilla Firefox for years and years but lately found it was slow and getting hung up when Shockwave crashed.  So now I'm using Chrome which seems better.

Windows 7 users complain of unprovoked Windows 10 auto-upgrades

Last October, the company announced that it would reclassify Windows 10 as a “Recommended” update from older versions starting in early 2016, at which point many more users would get the upgrade without explicit permission. That reclassification began on February 1, and auto-upgrades have been rolling out ever since. If complaints are reaching a higher volume now, perhaps it’s because the rollout is getting more aggressive.

Yikes! Good to know! I haven't had any pop ups for the upgrade, but my computer has shut down on it's own for updated while I was in the middle of something! Super annoying!! It used to ask to do it now, or reschedule, but it hasn't done that in a while. Good to know you can shut down automatic updates. I will take a look at my control panel for that.

Well, I couldn't find anywhere in my control panel to turn off auto updates, so I may have to get help with that. I looked at recent updates & they were all windows 7. My computer is about 6 years old now, so maybe I'm safe.

I'm on Win 10 as I mentioned, so things could be different, but I just checked, and updates are under Settings, not the Control Panel. I wouldn't turn off updates, though, as any that come down will be for Win 7. Windows 10 is not an update, it's a whole new operating system. When it installs, it first saves all your files, then deletes Win 7 or 8, and then puts in Win 10. Before it installs, it also checks your system to make sure you have room on your hard drive to do all that.

For pre-Windows 8, it might be in Control Panel under Security and then Check For Updates

Or this depending on your view:

Windows Update looks like this:

To change the auto update setting, click on Change Setting.

Then choose an option:

Windows Update is just for security patches, updates to MS Word and other programs, updates to IE, etc.

Windows 10 is a whole new operating system to replace the exisiting operating system. There may be an option in Control Panel --> System and Maintenance to upgrade to the newet OS manually. I have a Windows Anytime Upgrade option in my Vista Control Panel:

Windows 10 will eventually come through Windows Update. I'm serious. I know that WU is basically to update the OS for security and such, and for the Office suite programs (if you chose to have them updated). But Windows 10 will come through Windows Update.  If you've agreed to have 10 be installed, then you get to choose how it's installed. But their goal is to eventually upgrade all 7 and 8 computers to 10 and that will happen through the Windows Updating process.

If you really don't want 10, you need to figure out how to stop it, how to stop all the notifications you're now getting on your computer. Check those links out for more information. Or have your Windows Update set to only manually receive and install the updates you want to receive and install. Because if you have it set to automatically update? One of these updating times, you're going to see the big Welcome to Windows 10 screen. The upgrade does not automatically delete your previous operating system files right away because, once you have Windows 10, you have 30 days to roll your computer back to your previous operating system, whether it's 7 or 8. I don't know this for a fact, but maybe once the 30 days are up, then another update will go in and delete the old system, but it can't delete anything for 30 days. You have 30 days to decide if you want to keep 10.

I have read about people who were automatically updating their computers through Windows Update and lo and behold, they found themselves with Windows 10. When I upgraded mine, that's how I found out about the 30-day time limit for the roll-back.

The upgrade to Windows is now considered a Recommended Update by Microsoft. It is no longer Optional.

I got an automatic update. It was listed in my installed updates. Then one day last week, I sat down at my computer and it was counting down to begin the installation process. I then started turning off my computer every time I was finished. This morning I finally got rid of it for good. I don't want it on my computer.

The other evening I was heading upstairs when I saw this odd box on my screen. I started to ignore it, but thought I'd better check. It was thanking me for scheduling an upgrade to Windows 10!  I panicked a bit, but was able to find a way to cancel it.  I think what happened was when I walked away from my computer, Swanie was still sitting on the table in front of the monitor. I think he accidentally scheduled it!  I need to check into those links on how to disable the stupid popup.  I do NOT want Windows 10, I'm very happy with Windows 7.
@Misty8723 ...Your post made me chuckle.
Unless there is 'video evidence' of your sweet Swanie pressing the keyboard, ...I would still think it is Microsoft, pushing their product.

Customer Service would probably tell you that..."yes, we know madame, but it seems that your cat authorized and accepted the license agreement, too. There is nothing we can do."

Gosh, I would not put it past them, now.

(But I do know that cats can send messages by accidentally hitting 'enter'...so I better disable that pop up, too.)

I still think it was Swanie. Yesterday he opened up about 25 help windows, knocked the mouse off, turned the monitor off three times, sent two weird IMs to my sister, and he and just did this before I could get his 25 pound self off my keyboard.  I have to hide my credit cards so he doesn't go looking for the Calico's Gone Wild web site

I wonder if 'Windows 10'....has a 'lock out the cat from the keyboard' feature. Because if it does not, then it would not be helpful.

(I don't know if us 'cat people' can come up with any explanation for your Swanie, now. But after all that you described that he did, he may have already found that site...so yes...please hide the credit cards.

I'm just surprised that Windows 10 is not already installed, set up and running, with your computer sav-vy Swanie around.)
