Tail tip amputation leading to strange behavior

Our little guy got his tail caught in the door several weeks ago and needed the tip amputated. The recovery has been difficult since he gets what I would call hyper-focused on his tail at times and will aggressively go after it... even when it was bandaged and with a collar.

It's taken several visits to the vet over the last month and a lot of bandage changes because he wouldn't leave his tail alone. Last Saturday we took the bandage off permanently and his tail has been healing up quite quickly. The bandage seemed to be really bothering him and he was constantly licking/biting at it (remember this is 4 weeks after the initial injury).

He seemed to be a lot happier with it off, even with the collar on. However, he was having an episode once or twice a day where he would still get aggressive towards his tail but the collar made it tough to get at.

We want to get him back to normal so have started taking the collar off for extended periods and are watching him closely. Now he's continuing the strange behavior but it's more frequent. It almost seems like it's symptoms that seem similar to hyperesthesia. Several times a day he'll again become hyper-focused on his tail, swish it back and forth, tuck it in close, will stare at it, run around almost like he doesn't understand it's his own tail, and will sometimes go after it (licking/biting).

Petting him on his back and tail don't seem to make him any worse though and from what I've read that should make him jump if he had hyperesthesia. Scratching him under the chin or distracting him with a toy/laser stops the episodes as well.

Outside of these episodes, he's pretty much back to normal aside from having a shorter tail and a small scab that I think will be gone in a few days at the rate he's healing.

Is he just getting used to seeing his tail again after 4 weeks of a cone and bandage? Is it residual pain from the surgery that he's still getting over? Could the bandage have aggravated his skin and is still just irritated after 4 weeks of having it? What do you guys think?

The other behavior change is that he's become really cuddly.

And just to clarify, the laser/toy solution just stops the episode temporarily though. Usually a few minutes later he'll focus back on his tail. But can then be distracted again... he'll kind of go back and forth. The chin scratches seem to stop it no matter what. Putting him under a blanket (which he has always loved) will also stop him too.

It's hard to say.  Maybe it's phantom pain.  They say when you lose a limb you can get that, so I guess when you partially lose one, you could still get it.  Or maybe it's just because his tail is "different" now

How old is he?  Feline hyperesthesia usually sets in between 3 and 6 if I'm not mistaken, and certain breeds are more prone to it than others.  But I wouldn't think that surgery would cause it to kick in.

Have you spoken to your Vet about how he's acting and asked whether or not this is normal?

I'm guessing it's just going to take him some time to get used to his shorter tail.  After all, he lived his entire life with a tail of a certain length, and not it's different to him.  That's got to take some getting used to.

He's a couple months shy of 2 years old. He's not being aggressive to his tail today... now it seems he's more scared of it. We're thinking it could be phantom pain, a reaction to the bandage he was wearing, or just getting used to his tail again. His tail seems a bit dry... maybe it's a bit itchy too while the fur is growing back.

Our vet is one of our best friends and she's going to come over for dinner tonight. So she'll get to see him for a while. Thanks for your thoughts!

I would agree. Phantom pain or possibly some neuropathy (nerve pain or tingling.)

It might be worth discussing the use of Gabapentin with your vet. This is a medication that would help with neuropathy.

Hi. This post was now many years ago but I am posting in hopes that it will illicit a response. My kitty had his tail partially amputated a few weeks ago and is behaving similarly and I am worried sick!

I'm guessing since the poster immediately above you didn't get a response, you won't either. Your best bet is to start a brand new thread, which will probably have a better chance of being seen by more people.
