I am at my wits end with commercial cat food. My 8 year old kitty Gavin was diagnosed with small cell lymphoma 6 months ago. The biopsy showed only a slight thickening of his intestinal wall. He has responded well to chemo and thankfully was able to stop the steroids a few weeks in. He also takes B-12 injections monthly. Things have been going great until a few weeks ago. Long story short, something changed in the cat food I was feeding him and my 6 month old kitten. Both started having BM issues. I switched to Nature's Variety and within a few days all was normal again...so I thought. While my kitten was fine, Gavin started having more issues. Vomiting, bad BMs, and the biggest concern loss of appetite. He went from eating 9-10 oz per day to 1-4 oz. He lost the pound we worked so hard to gain!

We went to the vet this morning in fear that the cancer was back. Thankfully all tests came back normal. It appears that Gavin is super sensitive to food and any changes. He is now back on RC Rx food until his system calms back down.

I don't want him on Rx food since it really is not healthy. I am tired of researching foods and paying a premium price when in the end, they cause problems too. So I am looking into homemade food recipes. U-Stew was recommended to me in another thread. This looks great for me! Easy to make and not very time consuming. But would it be ideal for Gavin with his disease?

Also, I want to find a food that BOTH kitties can eat. They like to share. Now that Gavin is on Rx food, I have to make sure he doesn't get into his little brother's food. And little brother has decided that he likes the Rx food better than his NV...

Does anyone have any experiences they can share?

None of my cats really liked U-stew and from what I've gathered from others its very hit or miss. What about trying EZcomplete? As a disclaimer I have not tried it yet with my cats, but I do have a package in my pantry ready to use I've just been a bit sidetracked. However, the reviews are very good, and the creators of it are long-time raw feeders and very knowledgeable about cat nutrition. You might be interested in the story on their page about one owners cat overcoming lymphoma and how she feels a homemade diet helped make him healthier.

Good luck!

Do you know the difference between U-Stew and EZcomplete?

I am open to anything at this point.  I just want to make the healthiest choice for my two munchkins.  It looks like you can use EZcomplete for cooked food as well.  I have tried raw with Gavin before and it did not go well.  My goal is to keep them on the same food b/c they get food envy.  Right now I have to keep Gavin out of his little brother's bowl which causes hurt feelings :p

They're just different pre-mixes. Although EZcomplete has both a digestive enzyme as well as omega 3s already in it so you don't have to add those things. You can use EZcomplete with cooked or raw.

EZcomplete was co-created by a member here that knows a lot about cat nutrition and is very well versed in bio appropriate diets. I fully trust that she has created a product that is bio appropriate and better than most of the other pre-mixes out there, I just hope my cats like it!

You might want to check out their FB page if you want to ask any questions. I'm going to make a batch to try out (as soon as my meat thaws) in the next day or so.

I just wanted to update and say that I tired the EZcomplete tonight with raw boneless lamb (which in general my cats don't love) and they ate it up. They were REALLY interested in the powder several of them tried to lick it. It reminds me a lot of U-stew, but more palatable.

So glad to hear this! I need to order some and figure out what kinds of meat I'm going to use.

Great! I think I'm going to do this once my sick kitty is back to normal. He's getting better so I'm hoping we won't be on the Rx food for too long.

I checked out that great meat site you gave in a previous thread. Can I stick to ground meat or do I need to add organs?

If you use EZcomplete just use ground meat no need to add organs because EZcomplete already has organs included. If you're going to make homecooked you can buy pre-ground meet from the grocery store and use it. If you're going to feed raw you want to buy from a site like Hare Today.
