I haven't posted here in quite some time, but I know there's are a lot of valuable information on this site, and I hoping to find some today!  My Simba had PU surgery at the end of January, after 3 blockages over the past 2 years, and has had the cone off for just about 3 weeks now. He's doing well and seems to be back to his baseline. The problem is urinating. He uses the litter box and appears to have a strong flow, but he bolts out of the litter box before he finishes, which leads to a trail of droplets all across the floor and me following behind with the Swiffer Wetjet!

I initially thought he was just dribbling due to perhaps weak muscle tone and that would strengthen over time, according to the vet. Well after watching him over the last week or so, that doesn't seem to be the case. He seems to be freaked out by the stream or something and he appears to be running from it.

Has anyone else experienced this post PU surgery? I have a call into the vet's office but the surgeon who performed the surgery is only available a couple of days a week, so I'm still waiting for a call back.

Thanks in advance!

Lisa

I think your vet is indeed the best person to discuss this with.  I haven't heard of anything like this before, but don't have personal experience with this surgery.  Hopefully while you are waiting to hear back from your vet someone with more experience will stop by. Good luck getting this resolved- I know it must be frustrating.

My Cletus just had the surgery a week ago. He had his stitches removed today. His bottom is really red. How long with he have the discharge from the surgery site?

Is he still wearing the cone? One week seems a little too soon to have the stiches out and the cone removed. It's important that they don't lick that area and cause irritation. My guy has dissolvable stitches and wore the cone for 21 days.

I'm all about the cranberry. If you can get some cranberry in him, either by pill or open a capsule in food... Cranberry pills help tons with just the pain of peeing. Most cats that have had the surgery (mine included) have had some trauma by catheterizing multiple times, then on antibiotics and also having still some crystal building. All can lead to general irritation. Cranberry stops the bacteria from sticking to the bladder and just makes them more comfortable.

We are 10 days out from surgery. He is still wearing the cone. He tends not to mess with it when I have him out of the kennel. I just worry he will hurt his bottom. He just got the stitches out today. They gave him pain meds and added another one. For the next 3 days including today.

They told me only to give his tramodol once a day. But I think he needs it more at night.

I bought a soft cone on Amazon. It still kept him from licking his stitches, but he could move easier, rub his head, and not BONK into everything. Its hard to watch, having the cone on, so making it as comfortable as possible is nice. Also they will be more prone to bladder infections after the surgery simply because their anatomy has changed and there is less distance for bacteria from the litterbox to travel to the bladder. They are now more like a female. They squat moreso in the litter, not spray the side. They do make cranberry supplements. I keep an eye on the pee ball size. It has been a few months since my Marvin's surgery and last week I noticed small pee balls. I immediately started cranberry and by the next day it was resolved. I know personally cranberry pills help me a TON. They seem to do the same for him. I think he will from now on just stay on the cranberry supplement. It can'thurt, and it obviously has helped him.

I got it on amazon "cranberry relief" powder. You could probably open a human capsule, but I figured its in a fine powder, so it is easy to mix with wet food. He doesn't seem to mind it. Much better than when I saw him squatting for a while in the box and I shoved a cranberry pill down his throat. ;-P He much prefers the powder in his food. LOL It works like a charm.

I am so very sorry you are going thru this. Although I agree the vet should have offered a free check up, that is neither here or there. Kitty needs to go back to vet that did the surgery, ASAP  Is there any chance they might consider part payment for this visit and any new meds that he might need?

They haven't called me yet!! I checked on him he had more brown pudding like stuff on back end . I had to change the pad and when I turned him over it started to bleed I used the pads they gave me for the site . I looked and it seems he is open and it looks like it never was stiched up . Even if I touch his paw on that side he meows in pain . Changed his pad and he totally laid on the side that hurts . Hopefully they will call soon .

Please don't wait for a phone call from the vet. Get him in the carrier and take him there! They should have set up a followup appointment for free! My simba was seen for a check after 5 days at no charge. I believe he had a few scheduled followups at no charge. Either way, Max needs to be seen. You can apply for CareCredit right at the vet's office. But they really shouldn't be charging you. Just please take him and keep us posted. Prayers for you and Max from Rhode Island![emoji]128591[/emoji][emoji]128591[/emoji]

I'm so stressed and need advice. My 3yr old cat who never sprayed got blocked second time. Was in the vet a week. Home now on medication but spraying everywhere. I'm waiting for surgeon to come in 2 weeks to give him the PU surgery hopeing that would also put an end to his spraying. Now I'm scared he will continue. My husband would rather put him down but I can't stand the thought of it. I know if he continues to spray my husband won't want to stay. Any hope he won't? He's in meds the vet said would help relax him already
