.. hes very very nervous about everything to an extent have never seen before in my 34 and a bit years of being with cats. Hes physically shaking as if the nerves were getting to him - like I guess I would in the dentist.
Hes jumping at everything - every noise - you name it and is hiding all the time.
Will these stages pass?
Its been very very quiet before he dropped by here at his old place - - the young girl was on her own and was out at work a lot so was spoilt when she was in.
He is eating well and using the litter tray which is a good start.. am just a wee bit concerned

kev give him some time, he will adjust, everything is new. There are vibrations and sounds and smells he needs to get used to. Put him in a small room by himself and just let him get used to things gradually. Don't force yourself on him, let him come to terms with his world which is now brand new. I don't know where you got him but his behavior tells me he has been caged for the large portion of his life so far. Give him a upturned cardbord box with holes cut in it to hide and just let him chill

hissy - I applaud your comment as it seems strange that he seems fascinated by small seemingly impossible places to get into and curl up. I believe he was a rescue cat prior to carol's friend taking him in. I figure you are right on that score. Hes behind the sofa at the moment. Have had some time with him- hes jumpy as I guess hes never been used to having a 4 year old child in the house as well. He has enjoyed some attention with me this evening and the affection being shown is giving a few contented eye closes if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the help. Had cats all my life and still learning things day by day.
Off to go and have a chat with him.

I suspect that's about "the young of the species". Every creature knows that "the young of the species" -- whatever species -- is unpredictable, clumsy, and does not know its own strength. When the young of whatever species is larger than you are, you give it a wide berth.
