Wounds and frustrations

Early Saturday morning my husband and I had to take our cat, Cat (she's otherwise nameless), to the vet due to a nasty looking wound on her head. We get to the vet and sure enough she has three LARGE wounds on her ear and around it (our guess is mating gone bad). They cleaned it up to some extent and gave us antibiotics for it. She's in a soft cone until further notice and we're both miserable because of it.

My question stems from this morning: She just pulled her cone off and because of that, she pulled a scab off her ear so now she's flinging blood and such when she shakes her head. I've replaced her cone because she kept scratching at her ear. Is there anything I can do to make her feel better? She's presently trying to nap, but I know she's hurting and irritated. I wonder if removing the scab was a major setback as well.

Any thoughts?

Poor thing. I know it's usually okay to use a little cortisone cream on cats, but I would call your vet and ask because it might not be good for open wounds. But that might help with the itching when she's healed a little more. I'd also ask your vet if there's any pain medication that you could give her.

I'm assuming Cat is not spayed, in which case it's very important for her to be spayed as soon as she's healed. She will be much safer from other cats, and spaying is also going to improve her quality of life and health in general. Keeping her indoors will also keep her much safer if that is at all possible.

She's now leaking green gunk from one of her wounds. She's quite pitiful and I am so at a loss. We're giving her antibiotics but out of pain medicine for her.

It sounds like her wound is infected and I would take her back to the vet for something topical in addition to antibiotics.

I also urge you to get her spayed. It will improve her life and her health greatly. There are risks beyond too many pregnancies and heats, as you can now see.

Please contact your vet! It sounds like it's infected and the antibiotics are not doing enough to combat it. It's not likely to get any better without medical attention at this point. The vet may need to drain it and reclean it in a sterile environment.
