I have been fostering kittens (11 so far) at my local shelter for the past year. Last weekend, I was asked if I would foster a slightly older kitten who was having a tough time recovering from a URI. They thought that the stress of the shelter might be a factor. I said of course.

Everything was going swimmingly until I noticed that he (Barnaby) was breathing very rapidly. I took him to the vet who gave him an x-ray. The x-ray came back with a few negative things - his heart has some abnormalities and his lungs had *something* in them that didn't quite look like pneumonia. She said it could be just something in there that antibiotics could take care of or it could be FIP. She send me home with 2 antibiotics and basically said he's got a 50/50 chance.

That was last night. Today, he's been lethargic and breathing REALLY fast. No panting with his mouth open or anything, but just fast. He ate a few bites of food, but I noticed when he briefly stood up that he looks very thin now.

Long story short, I'm pretty sure it's FIP and I feel devastated. I mean, maybe it's pneumonia and he'll perk up a bit tomorrow because the antibiotics will kick in. But...the thought of this little baby dying in front of me is horrific. So much so that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to foster again. And while he doesn't look like he's in pain, should I bite the bullet and have him euthanized or just let him pass away here. I don't know which is better/worse.

One thing I know for sure - this is the worst.

Update (if anyone is even reading this) - Barnaby ate almost 3/4 of a can of food last night and drank a good amount of water. His breathing seems to have slowed down a bit (but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part) and he ate more food this morning. Maybe it is "just" pneumonia and the antibiotics are kicking in!!
