My older cat Bubs has had diarrhea for a day now. He eats soft food and we were putting a little apple cider vinegar in his food because I had read it helps with their coats. He has no other symptoms and is the same old cat but I'm worried that it may be something bigger! Any suggestions on what this could be or how stop it? I don't want to switch him to hard food because I know that can screw up their stomachs. Thanks guys!!

To treat diarrhea, try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin to Bub's food.  Don't use the pie filling - use the one without spices.  If you don't see improvement in a couple of days, he needs to see a vet.

Diarrhea has several causes:

* If Bub goes outside, it's possible he has developed worms or picked up a pathogen like coccidia or giardia.

* Simply switching foods can cause diarrhea so if you've recently done so, try going back to the food you were first using.

*  He may also have developed an allergy to something in his food.   What kind of canned food do you feed him?  It would probably be helpful to keep a food diary while rotating foods to identify if he does have any allergies.  BTW:  you don't have to switch to dry food to find an alternative that is good for him.  Cats on kibble do tend to develop more UTIs so it's best to feed canned or raw, if possible.

*   There are other more serious causes of diarrhea as well, such as IBD or kidney and liver disease.  This is why you really need to take him to the vet if it doesn't clear up quickly.

A word of warning about apple cider vinegar.  The wrong dosage can throw off Bub's internal pH so be sure you run this by your vet.  If you are looking for supplements for Bubs's coat, you might consider some of the suggestions in these threads.   Again, just as with the ACV, double check with the vet before adding any supplements.
