My 9 year old cat recently contracted feline herpes from a shelter kitten we took in and didn't realize had feline herpes until it was too late.  She is due for her yearly vaccines but is still in an active outbreak.  Because she is no spring chicken anymore, should I wait until she has completely stopped symptoms before getting her yearly shots or is it safe to go ahead and get them?

Yes.  The stress of the new kitty probably triggered the upper respiratory infection.  She may not have feline herpes, unless it's been dormant and now triggered from the changes.

We know she has feline herpes.  The kitten developed severe problems (couldnt even open his eyes and his fur was falling out) and during testing he tested positive for Feline Herpes but at this point he had been in our home sharing food, water and everything with the other two cats for two months.  He passed away a couple weeks ago (4 months after we got him).  About a week later, Eclipse the one i mentioned got the same gloopy, runny, sneezing symptoms...she has had them about a week now and while they seem to be improving some, Im quite sure she must have got the feline hepres as she has never been sick like this before (shes indoor only) and now after having a Herpes positive cat which she bathed and slept next to, she all of a sudden gets sick with the same symptoms, I doubt that is a coincidence.  The test is $170 so Im not going to get her tested like we did the kitten, Im sure she got the hepres.  Im just not sure if I should wait out this episode completely before taking her for her annual shots or if its better to get her vaccinated on time so they dont lapse at all?

I suggest waiting and also suggest you discussing with your vet about giving her future vaccines.

After some discussion with my vets (primary as well as our ophthalmologist) it was decided that the kitties with Herpes would no longer receive the FVRCP vaccine. This seemed to always trigger a flare up for them. I give vaccines one at a time, so FVRCP first, then Rabies one to two weeks later or vice versa. Flare ups occurred only with the FVRCP vaccine. Everyone still receives their Rabies (PureVax only) yearly, except the two that are medically exempt.

Also, vaccines don't expire directly after 12 months. They're actually good for longer, most for several years. I'm sure someone else can post more on this.
