We just the most heart wrenching emergency vet visit. Baggy was completely blocked due to struvite crystals. The vet it was due to stress and his dry food. I can't afford the vet food. He's 20lb and $40 for 3.5lb bag of food is far too much. I am also questioning the choice of dry food since she said it was a cause of his crystals. I also don't like the ingredients list.
I'm giving him watered down wet food but don't like him not chewing since his teeth could get gross. He has finished his meds and is doing better. The food isn't filling him up either. He's peeing a lot more, which is good.
Has anyone delt with this before in neutered males? What supplements and or raw/wet food worked best? I was thinking of going back to cooking for him but want to make sure I'm going about his urinary health the right way.
Thanks for any ideas and advice.

Canned food is definiltey the best thing to feed to a cat with a history of urinary issues
Or raw or home cooked if you wish to feed those.

You don't necessarily need the prescription food. There's no magical ingredient in the food that helps. You just need to get more water into the cat to keep the urine diluted to prevent crystals and bacteria from growing. The easiest way to do that is to feed canned food. There's good info here: http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth Commerical canned food will work and is easier on the wallet.

Dry food doesn't help clean teeth as many people and even vets believe. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/314993/diet-for-healthy-teeth Regular home dental care will keep teeth clean, just like it does for your own teeth.

if you want to feed raw or home cooked, see this forum on TCs for more info and recipies if you want to make something from scratch: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-amp-home-cooked-cat-food Some people like to give their cats raw meaty bones and raw organs to gnaw on for dental health.

Here's a thread in Nutrition that is similar to your question: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/312003/best-food-supplement-for-struvite-crystals

Kitty glucosamine supplements help the bladder lining heal; also available from the vet. They're inexpensive and easy to just break open and put on wet food.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I'm going crazy doing research on what would help my baby boy. He enjoys homecooked or raw food more than store bought. I think it's because of his feral history before his rescue.

Methioform tabs, a water fountain to drink from, and quality wet food.
