I went from 100 percent canned food and twice a day insulin.... to the zero carb  YOUNG AGAIN  dry food  and no insulin. ONE  week my kitty was at the vet nearly in a kitty coma . dehydrated and barely moving when I got home from work.  I will continue to use the dry but should have transitioned slowly. ie...cut the canned food and insulin in half and kept the dry food down.  His sugar was 500 when he hit the vet but believe it or not....he has been higher even on insulin....he is very brittle diabetic and tries to eat  everything in site.  Having the dry down keeps him from terrorizing the household but it was too much of a change at one time. my other cat (not diabetic) did fine but he is young and healthy. like I said...I will continue to keep the zero carb food down...it lasts a long time....just to curb his craziness with trying to find food but I will continue with wet and the insulin (half),, until I see it is not creating havoc with his health. I am a nurse and cats are somewhat new to me but I am sold on at least one meal with wet after this event and reading all the potential urinary problems.

Your cat's diet is opposite from most diabetic cats. Low carb canned food is best for diabetic cats (or raw if you choose to feed that), not dry food. The amount of carbs in Young Again dry food is highly debatable. The pieces of kibble need some starch (carbs) to hold the pieces together. Is there a reason why you can't feed 100% canned food again? There are many good low carb affordable varieties of canned food like Fancy Feast Classic / Gourmet and some Friskies.

As a nurse, I'm sure you are somewhat familiar with how diabetic people manage their disease. Dry cat food is like greasy fast food and sugar loaded snacks. Low carb canned food (or raw) is the cat Atkins diet and the best way to manage the diabetes from a diet stand point. Frequent small meals daily is best for diabetics.

A good web site for info on managing diabetic cats is FelineDiabetes.com
There's a great message board there if you wish to browse around and see how other diabetic cats are being managed. What insulin is your cat on? Was was the original starting dose your cat started at and was is the current dose? Do you test your cat's blood glucose levels at home?

Completely agree with the comment above. You basically switched your cat off of a pretty good diet and onto a lower quality one. I would switch him back to 100% canned ASAP and off of the kibble. If possible, look into a raw or homemade diet, which are really the best options.
