Hello there everyone,

I will give you the long story, since I am here already. My kitten is 6 months old. We got her in November and she is the sweetest little thing. When we took her to the vet for her vaccines, the vet noticed a heart murmur. She said kittens normally grow out of this around age 4-5 months. We had her heart checked again and the murmur was still there. The vet recommended we take our kitten to a cardiologist so they can do an EKG and ultrasound on her. The only problem is - the closest cardiologist to us is 5 hours away, which would require a hotel stay, on top of the outrageous amount they charge to see your cat (in total the trip and the cardiologist expenses would be around $2000). I love my kitten so much, but we don't have the money to pay for that. However, the vet said, my kitten could die under anesthetic if she doesn't know what is causing her heart murmur. I understand where the vet is coming from. and I really wish I could afford to have all of this done for my kitten. If something is really wrong with her heart, the $2000 would obviously be worth spending. But there is a huge chance that the cardiologist will say, "your kitten is fine, the heart murmur will not affect her under anesthetic". The vet even agreed, that a lot of times, that does happen. I guess what I am asking here is.... Have you ever had a kitten get spayed or neutered with a heart murmur? And what was the outcome? Please no upsetting comments.. I am really hurting about this and am genuinely looking for responses from people with experiences with this. Thank you so much.

I'm really sorry to hear what you are going through and don't want you to think we are ignoring you.   The fact that you haven't gotten an answer yet probably just means that no one who has read your post has been in the same situation.  However, I am sure there are members with cats with heart murmurs who have gone under anesthetic for other reasons than being spayed or neutered.  Hopefully one of them will stop by and give you the benefit of their experience.

Here is a thread that might help you make your decision:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/236609/heart-murmur-anyone-who-had-a-cat-kitten-with-this

Best of luck to you and your kitten.

Yep sorry I didn't see this. My kitty princess has a grade 4 heart murmur her entire life she is 14 now. Her grandma was 19 when she passed away and had a murmur as well. Princess mother was the same at 17. Princess has gone through a spay and about 8 teeth cleanings with no problems. After I switched to a cheaper vet I was told no more teeth cleanings unless I get the consult so I stopped with the cleanings. Luckily she doesn't have many teeth anyway. I couldn't afford a cardiologist appt either. The vet is playing it very safe. Heart murmurs in cats is not uncommon. You can find a vet that will spay her is all I'm going to say on the subject. But please don't worry too much without a second opinion from a new vet. I'd go to another vet and chances are they'll do the spay.

Hello hexiesfriend,

My baby girl got spayed on Monday morning and she is doing GREAT! :) The vet called me after I dropped my kitty off and asked me what I thought about keeping her intact. She was pushing me to go to a cardiologist. She said there is a chance my cat would need open heart surgery which would cost thousands of dollars. Anyways, I told the vet I needed her spayed and it's been two days and she is doing great. The vet also said her heart was steady and strong throughout the whole surgery!

Cats are definitely resilient animals. I am glad to know that Princess is 14 years old! Makes me feel like I will have a nice long time with my kitty.

Thank you so much for your reply! :)

What great news to hear that your girl sailed through her surgery with no problems!

Oh wassya,

I am so sorry I did not respond to your original post. I think I was just totally consumed with my guy...

A Grade IV heart murmur was discovered on my guy when I adopted him. He was 8 years old at the time. Thankfully, I was working so I was able to afford an echocardiogram with a cardiologist.

I learned a lot about murmurs.

Heart murmurs are more common on cats, than you would think. A lot of cats just grow out of them. Some never do. There are 2 types. The functional and non-functional ones. I was lucky in that my guy has a functional heart murmur. That means that his heart functions just fine, but has a tiny bit of a 'normal' abnormality...hope you understand that. The heart is functioning normally, without any hindrance from the murmur.. A murmur can be from a piece of heart valve which does not work the way other people/cats do. Their heart functions but just a bit of a variation.. As long as there are no symptoms, it is fine.

My guy is now 12 years old. He has gone through, 3 dentals, and an endoscopic biopsy without any problems.  I am not going to take any more chances, so he is done with his anesthesia...that is the issue.

However, if the Vet is aware of the heart murmur, they can adjust the anesthesia so that it is not as dangerous as it would be. They can also tweek it and use an alternative type of gas/meds.....

I have also been told that the more nervous the cat is the more the murmur can be heard.

I can tell you that sometimes my Vet cannot hear the murmur at all...other times she can.

sorry about not posting before the spay......

So glad your baby got through things fine....

Hope what I wrote, made sense...

Was wondering what your vet said about the grade 4 heart murmur since that's what my vet said and my cat is only 4 years old.
