My mother's cat suddenly passed away this morning and am trying to figure out what could have happened. Her cat was only five years old, long-haired mixed breed, indoor only other than on an enclosed patio, profoundly deaf (congenital), and has always been small for his age but proportional so we've suspected he had some form of dwarfism. Other than that, he's he had no health issues. My mom said about thirty minutes before he passed, he sneezed very loudly (like that of a person) and then she found him dead in a puddle of clear liquid. He also had gray foam coming from his mouth. She said he showed no signs of illness prior to this but I know cats are very good at masking their ailments. I'm really stumped as to what could have caused this. Thoughts?

It's never easy to lose a furkid but it's awful when it happens so suddenly like this. Please give your mom my condolences on her loss. I don't know what I would do if it happened to one of mine.

Without a vet doing a necropsy (autopsy), there's no real way to know. We can only speculate. He might have eaten something like a plant that is poisonous to cats. He also could have had a heart attack or stroke. Unfortunately, these things happen. He could have had an undiagnosed heart condition.

Was he an outdoor cat? If so, could there have been pesticides or something like that sprayed or put down in the area recently that he could have gotten into?

This was a terrible tragedy for a cat in the prime of his life. May he RIP. Please feel free to start a thread in his memory in our Crossing the Bridge forum.

She had no plants in the house and he was never allowed outside except on an enclosed patio so he would have had no access to any plants. I'm thinking he may have had something wrong with him associated with his dwarfism that we never knew about. I asked her if she wanted to do an autopsy but she doesn't like the idea of him being cut open and I understand. He's being cremated today and his ashes will sit alongside her other cat that passed away a couple years ago. I know we'll never really know what happened to him and can only guess, but it is hard to gain closure when we don't know the answers.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom's little guy.  I was also thinking it could have been an undiagnosed heart condition.  I have known of other cats who died suddenly like that from heart conditions--sometimes there are no symptoms.
