Hi everyone.

Most of you probably know Parsley Sage (Annie). She's the fur mom to Simon, Garfunkle and Joanie.  Annie has been with TCS for many years, and there are those of us who have gotten to know her here, and sometimes away from this site.  She's recently engaged, planning her wedding, just bought a house and more.  She's been a bit out of touch lately due to all that planning.  But now there is another reason and she could use some help.

A few days ago, I learned that her fiance was in an incredibly bad motorcycle accident.  He suffered serious injuries which includes already losing a leg, and faces multiple follow up surgeries.  The accident was not his fault but that of a speeding driver, who apparently it seems may not have any insurance coverage.  Thankfully, he is in good spirits and seems to be coping but it's a very long road ahead for both him and Annie.

Many of us are generous enough to periodically help out cats in need and I'm hoping that some of the members here might see it in their heart to donate to the Go Fund Me campaign her family and friends have created to help out with medical costs.  Normally I'd hesitate posting something like this but felt that they really need the help.  I ran it by the moderators here at TCS to make sure it was ok, as it's out of the ordinary to ask for help for a board member.  And also, to assure them that it is completely legitimate which sadly, it is.  Thankfully, all the mods agreed it was ok for me to post because of the special circumstances surrounding it.

I also ran this by Annie to be sure she was ok with me giving out this information.  She obviously didn't want to feel like she's asking for something which might make others uncomfortable and I assured her that I'd mention that it was my idea completely.  Which it is

Here's the link:

Please do not feel obligated at all to help.  I think that she would even appreciate kind words, good wishes and prayers from those who do so.  She has been by her finance's side non-stop since this happened and while she has a great support system of family and friends, it's always nice to know others beyond your immediate circle are also in your corner.  If you drop her a line here at TCS, she may not get back to you soon but I am sure she will see those messages.

Thanks for reading.  Now, back to cats!

I'm so sorry to read this news.  Annie, wishing you and Patrick all the best.  He must be quite a guy to be in good spirits even with such serious injuries.

How awful :(   I'm not able to donate any funds because I'm not working and am facing thousands of dollars in medical expenses of my own that I'm not sure how I'm going to pay for.  But I'll send prayers to Annie and Patrick.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about her fiance. That's horrible! Having known so many folks that were in motorcycle accidents and the result was the worst one possible, I'm glad to hear that he did survive the crash. I just can't even imagine.

I'll go there on the 16th, when my social security check comes in.  It won't be a lot, but I'll do what the budget allows.

Hi everyone, I am so sorry I haven't made it to this thread yet. I am so, so thankful to all who sent good wishes, vibes, and donations. It means SO much to us! I wish I could reach out to you all in person and give you a hug for supporting us during this time!

Patrick has come a long way since he got hurt. He spent 30 days in the hospital, 30 days in a nursing home, 30 days at home with me as his nurse, and is currently in inpatient physical therapy for the last three weeks and will be coming home soon. He had a few complications but overall has had a great recovery. He recently received his first prosthetic leg and has been building up his strength and just this week started walking! Not fast, but steady. So proud of him!

His left arm was paralyzed by the accident as a result of severe injury to the brachial plexus nerve group (he nearly lost the arm as well as the leg due to the severing of the brachial artery, but they were able to establish a bypass and restore blood supply) so that is sort of the biggest complication in his recovery - now that he has his prosthetic we are seeing that he will be able to walk very well, but only having one arm may affect him in ways we can't foresee. We had to wait for his broken pelvis to heal (for 3 months!) so that was our biggest concern, but now that that is resolved we will be turning our attention over to that left arm. There are tests and possible surgeries that could encourage nerve growth and help him regain some level of function or sensation or both. His prosthetist has also told us of orthotics that could be useful to help Patrick place his arm in certain positions to be able to use it for balancing things or as leverage for holding things with his other hand. So, there should hopefully be SOME kind of news on that over the next few months!

Legally... well, the other driver wasn't insured. We are entitled to a certain amount of money from Patrick's uninsured motorist policies, but that money could be claimed by his health insurance co. or the hospital, etc. so we have a lawyer to help us navigate that. He is not sure whether he wants to litigate against the person who hit him. She has a horrific driving record (24 violations, most of them speeding along with a couple driving on suspended license charges) and was also driving without her seatbelt and with her young child in the car that day, so we are hoping she is convicted of reckless driving and receives jail time. We aren't sure how likely that is (lawyer says unlikely), so the severity of her consequences for hitting him may affect his feelings about whether to sue her. Also, she is a younger person, late 20's, so it is not likely she has assets. Basically, we COULD, hypothetically get a judgment of any amount - like, $1 Billion - but whether she will ever be able to pay any money against the judgment is a different question. It costs, both financially and emotionally, to pursue a civil case as well. Patrick may decide that he wants to forget about her and move on with his life and recovery. It's completely up to him. And it's not something we have to decide now.

In better news, we canceled our big wedding and got married in the hospital on St. Patrick's Day (of course!) and that gave us such a sense of peace! Things have been tough, logistically, financially, emotionally, but being together and being married is key to getting through things!

Thank you all again, and again I sincerely apologize that I did not come to the thread earlier to thank you all.

Thank you for updating us. I'm glad to hear he's progressing well. Being able to walk is such a huge thing, and I sure hope he gains more use out of his left arm. It's lovely that you got married in hospital like that. I'm sorry it wasn't the wedding that you planned, but I'm glad you still have each other. :heart3:
The months ahead will still be tough ones, and I hope you know that you have people who care who are rooting you on and wishing you well. :hugs:

Again, I'm so sorry this has happened to Patrick. Regarding the nerve damage, I've learned via my mom what an amazing thing the human body really is, and how well it can heal itself over time. While the degree of my mom's nerve damage was likely not nearly as bad (it happened as a result of muscle atrophy and the "insulting" of the nerve during hip replacement surgery), she was originally told she would never be able to move her foot again or feel anything. It's been 20 years this year, and while it's not like it was before, every year there's a bit more feeling and a bit more movement. Mom is older (79 this year) and it was just below the knee and down that was impacted in her case, so she didn't really do any PT to help it along. I'm sure that will be happening at some point with Patrick though. So, I have good thoughts for that  And as far as the prosthetic, it's good to hear he will be able to walk well with that.

And I just donated. It's not a lot - I'm poor as heck this month. I forgot to donate before (probably read this when I was tired or something).

Thank you so much for the update.  Some tough times ahead, certainly, but you will be facing them together, which means much.  I'll be keeping a candle lit for Patrick for the next few months, for his continued progress and healing.
