My cat has vomited twice in the past 2 days and both times it was clear, gooey liquid. He NEVER throws up!  Then since there was no food in this vomit, I noticed he hasnt been eating very much. His behavior is normal and hes been going to the bathroom normally so thats why I am a little confused. I took his dry food away this morning and opened a can of wet food and he ate a little of it and i left out an extra water bowl for him today.

I was thinking maybe he has a hairball? He is part Maine Coon so he has long hair. I did give him some hairball medicine at like 3am .. Could this be causing his loss on appetite?

Has anyone else every experienced this before?

I took Wurp to the vet not long ago for this exact thing.  Forgive me for being a bit gross, but it was a clear, yellowish, snot-consistency vomit. Nasty mess to try to get up with a paper towel, just gooey.   I had to change his eating habits and add some Metamucil to his wet food because they thought that he had hairballs forming that weren't passing, and possibly some slowing of his GI tract.  I have also had to begin putting out fresh wet food for him 3 x day, so that if he gets the urge to snack when I'm not home something is there and he doesn't go for the dry food.  He has had some major dental issues in the past and has few teeth now, so if he gets into the dry, he just swallows it whole and then yaks it back up.  The increase in the wet food has cut down on the hairball issue as well as the vomiting.  They told me the wetter the better when it comes to his food.   And he is one of those cats that will absolutely refuse any kind of the hairball paste stuff, so I'm having to treat it with altering his diet and increasing his fluid intake (plus a bit of Metamucil).

I feed him Natures Variety Instinct dry food mostly. Hes only 15 months old. When i got him he had severe diarrhea issues and the vet couldnt figure out why. I took it upon myself to research different foods and found this brand was good for digestive health and had a probiotic in it with all kinds of good stuff and vitamins.. Within a day he was pooping normally. I did give him some hairball paste this morning which he doesn't like either but he ate it off his nose so I am hoping that's all it could be. Plus i gave him the wet food this morning. Maybe I should start giving him wet food more frequently. Like i said though, his behavior and everything else seems normal to me so Im confused.

Wurp is 12 now, and I've had to alter his diet several times so far during his life.  He went through a spell where he wouldn't eat any kind of wet food, only dry.  He would refuse wet altogether.  He still really, really wants dry...but I steer him towards the wet and only allow him a very little bit of dry now.  Certain kinds he can chomp up with his remaining toofies.  He is so picky though.

I haven't tried the Natures Variety, although I've seen it on Chewy.  I may have to give that a try!

Over the years I've seen a lot of that snotty-looking puke, I can't stand it!  Wurp's biggest hurdle is hairballs.  If I can just keep those things sliding through the other way out....that's my goal!

Oh yes, he has the hair!  Wurp is part Maine Coon (his dad was MC).  He has the long fluffy hair, and curly, curly hair on his tummy.  Not sure what the curly is all about, but it is unreal.  I'll put a pic with this post.  I never see him washing excessively...so I don't know when he eats all the hair.  I thought maybe Wurp had gotten into something again, he ate some face cream once that gave him the upset tummy for days ($$ vet bill too).

It wouldn't hurt to call the vet!  I worry my vet's staff to death because I'm a paranoid kitty mom, but at least it puts my mind to rest.  I have a friend that works for my vet and she just laughs at me--but tells me to call if anything is odd.  Go with your gut.

HAHA OMG He is a precious baby!  As you can see, Wurp has the middle age spread!  I love that picture of Loki, oh it reminds me of Wurp when he was younger!

I rarely see Wurp washing, usually it is his belly (that soft fine curly stuff) or his face/paws. He never puked much when he was young but it doesn't take much now to set him off.  I find little hairballs sometimes hacked up around the house.  They are small, and I guess I should be glad he gets them out, but ewww.  I kinda prefer finding them after they've dried!

I've also noticed he is very prone to puking that goo if doesn't eat.  He is so picky and I swear he channels Ghandi because he will go on a hunger strike if he doesn't like what I'm giving him.  I tried getting him on some duck wet food not long ago, and he wouldn't touch it.  I tried for two days, barely giving in, mixing it with his usual food, and he still turned his butt to me.  He started the gooey puking, and here I go calling the vet.  They told me it could be bile and stomach acid, to just give him whatever he wanted so he would eat.  I plunked down a can of his regular food and he ended up eating 3 cans that day.  He's an ass.  But we love him.

haha! we love our fur babies! Loki has never been picky thats why i find it strange that he hasnt been eating much but if theres a hair ball stuck, than i suppose that must be uncomfortable for him. I hope i come home from work today and find the hairball on the floor and the food in his bowl gone. hes acting so normal so i dont understand what else it could be

Do you think thats all it could be? I hope it's nothing serious. I just never thought a hairball could cause lack of appetite

If he's bunged up with one then yes. Obviously we won't know unless he passes it and his appetite returns to normal. I would give him another day and observe him. If his behaviour changes, or if he goes right off his food, then I'd think a vet visit is in order. But this has just happened over the last two days, and if it were my cat I'd wait and see for a bit.

Oh how I would love to as well!  But he would probably have a hissy fit!  He does let me rub it until he falls asleep, he loves for me to rub that belly fur!  Rubbing that belly is my secret weapon to calm him down.  I do that at the vet's when I take him to get his nails trimmed (yes, I'm too chicken to do it, rather pay them $7 to trim them and me not hurt him!)  He will lay like you see in that pic the whole time they trim his nails.

That's what I'm thinking too. Thanks!

The bad thing is, Wurp throws a fit with us at home trying to trim his nails or actually do anything with him.  I take him to the vet and he acts like a goody-two-shoes.  He will sit on the reception desk and purr until his turn!  Then he loves and rubs all over the vet and tech, just like he's the most perfect boy, eats the treats they give him, then I get him home and he gives me the butt side of him the rest of the day and won't have a thing to do with me.  He will let me bathe him with only dirty looks from the sink, but I only do that if absolutely necessary.

I swear he knows how to manipulate us so well.

I came home from work last night and Loki still hadn't touched his food or water and there was more clear throw up dried on the floor so I got worried. Took him to the vet and the vet said he seemed totally fine so they gave him an anti-nausea injection and some fluid injection to keep him hydrated. When I brought him home he was still acting normal. Woke up this morning, no throw up but he still didn't eat or drink and didn't go to the bathroom at all. I opened up some  wet food again this morning and he ate some. If I come home from work again today and he hasn't eaten, it's back to the vet for us for x-rays and blood work

Poor baby!  Yeah, I would have taken him too.  You just never know what is going on with them.  I so wish they could tell us how they felt!  Keep us updated.

Is there any possibility he ate something he shouldn't have? (Like a plant?) We had a somewhat similar incident with that a couple months ago. Edwina also got anti-nausea medicine (Cerenia) but it took a bit of time to kick in.

We dont have any plants and I have no idea what else he could have gotten into. He's not really that kind of cat. He will only eat food and I never leave food out.
