So, I brought 9 month old Gus home about 3 weeks ago from the shelter. Upon realizing he had explosive diarrhea (and apparently has had a history of it after looking at his vet records), I took him straight to the vet where he stayed for 17 days and took a full 2 weeks worth of metranidazole to treat it. He came back home less than a week ago with *semi* solid stools and obviously feeling better. He is now on a diet of 90% wet food, Hils Science for digestive issues. That, and he nibbles on my resident cat's Nature's Variety dry food. (No grains, low ingredient, made to reduce stool smell)

WELL. Let me tell you. This kitten EATS EVERYTHING. He wants to eat ALL of his wet food, ALL of the dry food in the bowl, and ANYTHING that I am eating at the kitchen table! He stole an ENTIRE piece of ham off of my plate the other day and DEVOURED it whole in less than a few seconds. I have no clue why he is doing this. He is well fed, I am giving him PLENTY to eat. He acts like he is absolutely starving, begging and climbing up me when I even have cookies or something sweet in my hands.

On top of this, since the day I brought him home, his gas and stools are absolutely unbearable. I'm not talking normal kitty poop smells, I'm talking my ENTIRE home is unbearable to be in because of the smell!! Resident kitty won't even sit next to new kitty for too long because of his gas and the stench. His stools are still soft yet formed. Can anyone help me? His tummy is pretty gurgly sometimes, too. He is active and seemingly happy. He loves to play and torment his big brother. I am just worried about his digestive health.

Any type of gas and tummy gurgling sounds from a cat clearly tells you his digestive system is working overtime and not agreeing with what he is eating.

It seems to me that someone who formerly had him was feeding him people food, that is the only reason a cat has this much interest in people food.

Has he been wormed since you have had him? Despite that shelters usually do this, they don't necessarily give the 2nd dose as a follow up, and very often, one is just not enough.

Worms will cause his appetite to be big, and soft poop too.

Do you know what he was on the metro for?

This may help tell us the issue here.

Poor guy! For now I would definitely keep his diet as limited in ingredients as possible.

Honestly, I am not sure why the vet even put him on the metro, other than her telling me that it would treat his chronic diarrhea. The shelter paid for the entire two week vet stay, so I do not think that they ran any tests or did any fecal panels (at least they never told me they did). They just kept telling me they were just going to "control his stools" every time I asked if he had a virus or a parasite. He was losing weight, and had squinty, red runny eyes and loud, rattly breathing when I first brought him home, also. I finally got his vet records from the shelter he had stayed at and it looks like his digestive health/health in general wasn't that good to begin with:

8/28/15- Temp 104.3 thin, dehydrated, no formed stool in colon. Blood on perineal area appears that it is coming from rectum? Begin w/ Clavomax BID .22 for 10 days

8/29/15- Temp 102.3

8/31/15- Temp 102.3 condition appears to be improving

10/16/15- Start Clavomax 0.4cc 2x daily for 14 days, green discharge from eyes and nose, coughing

11/16/15- Start on 1/2 tablet metro 10 days (no explanation on this one)

Would deworming be on his Vaccination and Parasite sheet? Because all it says is his rabies vaccine and 3 FVRCP vaccines.

*Update- I just called shelter and according to the lady I spoke with, they do all deworming there.

I would ask the vet to do the diarrhea PCR test to make sure he doesn't have any parasite. Has he been tested for giardia and calicivirus?   Stinky, soft poop is generally indicative of food not agreeing with him.  I would ask the vet for a food for sensitive tummies.  I have a cat who eats Royal Canin Gastro HE because he can't tolerate a totally grain-free diet.
