Happy Leap Day!

Do you enjoy reading?  What generas?  Do you prefer a traditional paper book or e-reader?

The last few years I have been busy so I haven't read as much; but I was sick last week so I got my kindle out.  It was great!!  In fact I decided its time to upgrade my kindle.  I had the keyboard one that you need a book light for in dim light.  The book light was driving me nuts!  I've been doing any reading I have done on my Kindle Fire; but it is more comfortable on my actual kindle.  When I went to look at them; I found out Amazon has a trade in program.  So I've now sent my old kindle in to see how much they will give me for it towards a new kindle.  I'm planning to get the paperwhite with a slim cover.  I want something that won't be in the way when I want to hold it one handed.  My DH has a kindle with a nice slim cover and it's so much more comfortable to hold.  I'm borrowing his for now.
I'm in search of the perfect PURPLE cover too.

When e-readers first came out I did not think I'd like them!  Then DH and I were walking through a Barnes & Noble one day and I saw a girl sitting there reading from one!  I do still enjoy the feel of a real book; and being able to peek ahead easily!  But I'm just as happy with the kindle. And the instant access to new books is great!  I go for different things at different times; so it's nice to chose what i'm in the mood for and search that way.

I usually prefer some sort of CLEAN romance.  I like historical/period/Regency, western, Amish, modern, etc.  But it needs to be kept at the PG or MAYBE PG-13 level for me.  I also like some mystery and suspense books.  Every now and then I'll try a shorter fantasy type story; but thats pretty rare.  DH prefers thriller type suspenseful books; so we don't get to share books.  I prefer to read to escape drama and craziness; not to get into someone elses craziness!  And I like a happy ending!

I enjoy science fiction, science non-fiction
, mysteries and autobiographies.  Although I love hardback and paperback books, when I moved into my current apartment, I had to leave behind an enormous book collection for lack of room.  Ever since, I have been replacing them with ebooks for my Kindle.   The Kindle is okay and I do enjoy reading on it, plus it is much easier to move ebooks than regular books.  But I do miss being surrounded by shelves of books - there is something wonderfully cosy about them, not to mention the joy of being surrounded by all those imaginations put to paper.

Well, in the old days I used to enjoy reading and got through a lot of books and mags of all kinds. But now I do practically all my reading on the Internet, be it news, technical articles or...reading posts on boards. Exceptions are cat books that I still read in eBook form, though still on the computer screen.

I've learned to love my Kindle. I was always a reader and devoured books.  But as I was getting older, even with good glasses I was finding books on paper to be difficult to read.  I always would get tired only several pages in.

Everyone kept telling me to get an e-reader and I finally broke down this past year. What a difference it's made. My enjoyment of reading has returned!

Anyway, lately I prefer non-fiction on various subjects; biographies, food, cats (duh!), health, financials, music, etc.

I've read very few fictions books in the recent past, a couple from two favorite writers (Douglas Coupland and John Irving - I was kind of disappointed with both sadly).  I just started J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy but have barely gotten into it to comment yet.

I don't have a kindle and don't know how to use one. Do you buy the kindle and then buy a kindle version of the book online and download it to the kindle. Can you use them in the car at night to read, if you are a passenger of course? What are the advantages of a kindle? Sorry for the questions, but I really have never seen one, let alone know how to use one. :lol3: Can you use them reading outside in bright light. Most of my reading is done on my porch sofa with my cat.

I like different types of books it kind of depends on the mood that I am in at the time.  I have a Nook around here somewhere but it's been a long time since I used it.  Most of the books that I 'read' are audio ones.  I borrow them from the library and I listen to them while I am working.

@blueyedgirl5946:  Yes, exactly.  A Kindle is a brand of e-reader.  The e-books are files you buy to download onto your e-reader.

I believe Kindle is an Amazon.com related device and that Kindle e-books are only compatible with Kindle e-readers, though I'm not positive.

I have a Kobo Aura e-reader which I love. I bought it so I could borrow e-books from the library.  Kindles are not compatible with the library e-book software.

You can read e-books on a tablet or even a smart phone, but e-readers have a screen that makes it easy to read outside in the sunlight. Mine also has a backlight that I can use when it's dark in the room and I don't want to bother turning on a light.

I've always loved reading and now LOVE my e-reader.

I read mostly fiction - current best sellers, modern time & historical romances, etc.  I sometimes read biographies.

There's a "what are you reading?" forum here on TheCatSite if anyone wants to check it out or join in - http://www.thecatsite.com/t/311901/what-are-you-reading-2016

I read as often as I can, which usually means sometimes at lunch and in bed before I go to sleep. I LOVE my Kindle and my Nook e-reader.  I didn't think I would until I actually got one. The Nook was first, small black and white one. Then I decided to spring for a Kindle Fire.  Mostly I download free books to the Kindle and read those. If I don't like it, I can delete and not feel I've wasted any money.  As for preference, I like fantasy, science fiction (but not zombies and that business), historical especially set in the old west, sagas, etc.

I seem to be having trouble reading as often as I'd like lately. But I dearly love to read.

I have my Nook HD for reading. But I also put the Kindle app on my Nook, so I can use either one.

My favorite genre is sci-fi or the supernatural. Not horror so much. Sometimes I'm up for a romance, but not often. Maybe a whodunit.

We changed some of our magazines over to digital.

I much prefer e-books to hardback or paperback. Generally I like non-fiction (true crime, biographies, history) and mysteries.

I love reading! Dominantly history books (So much more fascinating than fiction, to me) but when it is fiction, I like fantasy/adventure or mystery.

And only traditional paper books. I can never let go of it - of the feel, textures, scents, format etc it's so much nicer for me to delve into a story. Have absolutely no interest in anything electronic.

I look at enough screens anyway, with the pc, my smartphone, laptop, the till, and so forth for hours daily, so on top of many other reasons why I don't want something like a kindle, don't want to stare at another screen - especially when cuddled in bed.

And Happy Leap Day in return
Our posts today are forever documented in a very special way!

I like real books from the library. I read too many to buy them in any form. In fact, I've got to quit reading as I stay up too late reading them. I like mysteries, all kinds, and nonfiction, mostly history. That's spoiled historical fiction for me because authors play fast and loose with reality. Just finished Dogfella  about any former gangster now running an animal shelter.

Yes. If you are interested in a Kindle (they are great), you buy it from Amazon. When you buy a book from them, they will deliver it automatically to the Kindle. I've never used mine outside but they do sell anti glare screen covers.

Yes; that! I dont need an anti-glare screen on my old one. I do take it outside so I can read while my kids play. I chose the kindle because Amazon had the largest selection if e-books in my preferred genres. Its also much lighter than many books. (I like to lay down to read.) I won't need a booklight with the new one.

I also have some digital magazine subscriptions that came with my paper subscription to them. It gives it some different features; like moving a picture caption or changing wall colors in a picture (Better Homes & Gardens). I like the digital & paper equally for magazines. But those are only on my kindle fire tablet. The kindle e-reader doesn't have color.

I've always preferred paper, but my middle-ages eyes need something like a kindle, so I can adjust the size or even the font of the letters.
