Do you have a comforter or duvet on your bed?

We have a king-sized bed and each have our own (oversized) goose-down duvet for winter use and light-weight polyester-filled ones for warmer weather. That way nobody's stealing the covers. :lol3: We use the covers rather than flat sheets and have never had a problem with bunching. I keep a folded and tucked-in fleece blanket at the foot of my side of the bed, which does double duty. It keeps the duvet from sliding and makes a terrific cat bed.
Do you use the same covers for both seasons, or do you have 2, or rather 4, covers?
Good idea to use the fleece blanket as a cat bed.  That wouldn't work for me, though, as Ruby doesn't sleep at the foot of the bed, she crawls under the covers with me! :lol3:
We have two different winter sets of covers (actually three, but one set is way too heavy) and two sets of very light summer ones.

Thanks for all the comments.  It's given me a lot to think about, as in, do I want a comforter, duvet or quilt.  Or maybe a combination to mix it up.

I have a heavy weight bedspread/quilt which I bought from LLBean several years ago. I can leave that on year round. I have central AC in the summer. I have matching pillow covers for it, and a couple of colored throw pillows.

In the winter I have a thin microfiber blanket under it. My feet are always cold. The AC get me cold when it goes on. I am usually a cold person, and love to cuddle under a quilt/comforter.

My feet are always cold too, so I usually wear socks to bed in the winter time.  Sometimes I kick them off during the night, other times they stay on all night.

Me too
One of those thick long slipper-type socks.... and under all those blankiets, too. If my feet get too cold they and my lower legs tend to cramp up really bad.

I use a duvet. I have no idea what you're talking about bunching up or slipping. What's the difference between a duvet and a quilt. What is a comforter.
I only use the duvet in the winter. In the summer I use the cover of the duvet as a sheet.

I have a quilt.  For now.  It has both velvet and satin blocks on it.  The satin blocks have tiny clawpricks on them and the velvet ones are covered in enough fur to reupholster a decent sized litter of kittens.  Even after vacuuming.  I must get a ride to the public laundromat with their triple loaders.  SIGH.

I have a quilt. In the winter we also have a large afghan at the foot of the bed that we can pull up if we need it.

We recently stayed at a hotel that had what they called "European linens". It was a duvet that was covered, but no top sheet. It was a little odd to us and took a bit of getting used to. I was warm one night and it wasn't like I could push the duvet down because there was nothing else.

That's what we use instead of top sheets.

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
i have several quilts and comforters. if its below 0 then i use a quilt and comforter.

If its in the 20s and a cat is sleeping on me I often sleep in shorts and a thin quilt. Honeybee is very hot. I usually fall asleep in a ball up bunch of blankets and wake up sweating due to Miss Honeybee curled up on my shoulder/chest area..so I try to shimmy out from under the blankets without her taking off. Otherwise if I move too much she takes off and won't come back. I often fall asleep with her red velvet blanket on me as she loves to sleep in it. This morning she must have been cold, she was in a tiny ball on me and I took the corners of her velvet blanket and covered her up and fell back asleep to purrrring. She wanted me to cover her but she doesnt nip my hands or anything unless her dish is empty.

In the summer I have this thin quilt I use plus I found an antique linen sheet that was pretty expensive and old but I found this 100% linen sheet is absolutely necessary in hot steamy weather. I need to have a blanket on me and I don't like my skin touching so I often bunch it around my legs and arms to keep from sticking to myself in the summer.

Someone asked what a comforter is=its a thick quilt type blanket=usually for winter months-its very soft and usually has fluff filling inside of it.

@Stewball  Here's a few definitions from another site.  Hope it helps.  Here's the link if you want to read the whole thing and see pictures:

http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1084803/list/coverlet-duvet-quilt-comforter-whats-the-difference

Comforter. Thick and (sometimes) quilted, a comforter differs from a quilt in that colors are generally dyed and patterns are not embroidered. Comforters are filled with layers of material including polyester batting (a synthetic fiber), down feathers, wool or silk. The loft (thickness) of the filling determines the weight as well as the level of insulation.   Comforters are stitched or quilted to secure the filling and ensure that it is evenly distributed.

Quilt. Traditionally composed of three layers of fiber, quilts consist of a woven cloth top, a layer of batting and a woven back, all stitched together in decorative patterns. Different from other forms of bed covers because they are generally pieced together with many pieces of cloth, quilts are occasionally found with a single piece of fabric on the top (a whole-cloth quilt).

Duvet and cover. A duvet is essentially a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers or a synthetic alternative. It is recommended that duvets are inserted into a removable cover, much like a pillow and pillow case. Duvets and duvet covers are designed to be used alone (with no sheets) because the insert can be removed and the outer "bag" can be laundered, but many people use them with sheets anyway.

@Mamanyt1953  When I first read your reply, I though the claw prints were imprints on the quilt. Then I read on and realized they were lovingly added by your own feline(s).

@AbbysMom  someone else mentioned something like that to me.  Though I think it was a case of the hotel having a sheet and duvet, just no extra blanket.  So at least in that case, if you didn't need the duvet, you did have a top sheet to cover you.  Especially for those of us who need a "security blanket" even when it's very warm.

@foxxycat  so you too need that "security blanket" thing, even in the summer.  I've heard before about linen being a good choice for when it's warm, but I've never had the opportunity to try one.  And yes, a cat can certainly make a difference in the bed temperature.

Thank you all for your helpfulness. I have a duvet and I'm very happy with it. In the summer I use the cover of the duvet as a sheet. It's pretty and matches the rest of the bedding.

@Stewball   you're welcome. Glad it helped.

I like your idea of using the duvet cover as a sheet in the summertime.  I must try to remember that, should I end up buying a duvet.

I have a duvet with covers, and I change the covers with the sheets once a week to two weeks or so. However, it's really not a lot different cleaning-wise than having a comforter and using a top sheet between the sleepers and the comforter. I never had to clean comforters or duvets that I had before unless something untoward happened, but my husband is rather sweatier than I am, particularly while sleeping, so the duvet still needs to be cleaned about once a year.

@Lonelocust   thanks for your comments.

I haven't bought anything new yet, but have a lot more information to consider when I do go looking for something.

I found out about linen in some books I was reading byDorothea Benton Frank who writes about Sullivan Island in S Carolina=she always talks about how sweaty and humid it is=I bought some 100% linen pants as I work in a hot welding shop and yep no more fabric sticking to my skin like jeans do. so I had to hunt around several antique shops to locate the sheet..I was shocked at how much it was used plus it has a couple of tears at the corner which I dont care. Its a nice white linen and feels like heaven. I sleep on it in the winter and cover myself in the summer. I tried to find brand new sheets made with linen but most are a mix of polyester and linen. YUCK. I WONT wear polyester. I sweat too much and polyester is great for folks who are always cold-its a great insulator but for me I prefer natural fabrics..so I am kind of a snob when it comes to blankets and sheets.  One of my favorite quilts was free at a yardsale because it has a tiny rip in it..I still need to fix it. yes the cat makes me hot. and some nights she doesn't come up to keep me warm and other nights she never leaves..I have never had a cat who drapes herself across me before so I got spoiled when she is up there every night...not sure why she didnt come up last night-probably because i snore...another night she was under the covers at the bf feet LOL. silly cat
