I've always used a comforter, but they are to hard to launder and dry cleaning is expensive.  So I'm considering a duvet, but I don't know much about them.  So I'm looking for opinions on both.

Do you have a comforter or a duvet on your bed?   Which do you prefer?  Why?

I have a nice goose down duvet, living in Canada I needed one. I like a duvet in winter it is so light but warm. In spring and fall I go with the comforter, it is too hot with a duvet

I have a quilt on my king sized bed. I keep it on year round. My mother hand made it for me so it's very special to me. I got to pick out the fabrics. :D

I have both and then some on the bed right now
I have the comforter which came in a bed-in-the-bag set. It's fine for the warmer months use but not so much for the winter. It's machine washable but it barely fits into my large capacity washer and dryer so I take it to the dry cleaner once a year. On top of the comforter I have a heavy goose down duvet. On top fo the duvet I have an old wool blanket and on top of that (!) there's the suede pet blanket. And usually two cats on the bed but neither adds much warmth. I'm one of those people who is always cold
In the summer I just have a light blanket on the bed.

I've had comforters before. The stuffing eventually gets bunched and shift inside, especially after washing (Even with a dry cleaner). I gave up with that.

Since it's warm in my bedroom, even in winter months, I've settled on a quilt. It's lighter and much easier to clean. looks nice too.

I have a white comforter, but it gets SO dirty (I swear I'm not dirty, it just looks off white in places where it gets touched frequently.) It's supposed to be dry clean only but I usually throw it on gentle in a front load washer once a year. It's pleated, so it's not holding up super well, but it was less than $100 from Bed Bath & Beyond so I'm not super concerned right now. I'm planning on getting a new bedroom set within the next year and with that a bigger bed, so I plan on upgrading then anyway.

I found Crane & Canopy  bedding earlier this year, so I'm planning on upgrading to this. The thing I hate about Duvets are they're just kind of big and fluffy usually with no structure or lines to them. Plus, with all the duvets I've seen, half the time the fluffy duvet part ends up shoved in one side of the cover. I loved the C&C bedding because it looks like a comforter (pleated, pin tucked, quilted, etc) but that's all just in the cover. And the covers are machine washable. AND there's cool ties and things inside so the duvet part stays in place. Super cool video about the duvets here.

I'm super excited, but I need to actually make myself pick out a bedroom set first... and refinish the wood floors, and Spackle walls... Ugh, remodeling is such a pain.

I have multiple blankets with a throw, no comforter. I get hot and cold throughout the night, and a heavy comforter would bother me anymore. Plus, Robin loves the feel of the fuzzy throws. And honestly, so do I!

We layer nice cotton blankets with a light comforter and, a heating blanket on top - just in case. With the top sheet I think right now we have 5 layers LOL.  I get hot and cold all night so being able to either bundle up or kick off is necessary.   I love duvets but find them more trouble than they are worth.  The comforter inside used to slide around too much and became too difficult to keep in place.  I hear there are better constructed ones now where this doesn't happen but I am skeptical.

Right now, we have flannel sheets on the bed. With an electric blanket. And our comforter is white with red snowflakes.

Yep, our Canadian winters are chilly and I love to be warm, so I get what you're saying.
Do you have a cover for your duvet?  If so, does it bunch up?  And what material is your duvet made of?

How lovely.  One of a kind, and made especially for you.

Hmmm... I've never had the stuffing in a comforter bunch up.  But that is a concern I have about duvets.

I'm not dirty either
but I know what you mean about white getting that yellowed "dirty" look.   Another reason why I'm ready to replace my comforter.  I watched the video.  Sounds interesting.  Good luck with your bedroom makeover!

Sounds cozy.

5 layers!  Wow!  You beat me.  I only have 3, including my comforter.

A long time ago I had an electric blanket, and one night the power went off and I woke up freezing!

My concern with getting a duvet is the bunching and sliding around issue.  I've seen that a lot with the reviews I'd read and why I've been hesitant to get one.

I used to use flannel sheets in the winter, but changed to microfibers ones now, which I really like.   Your comforter sounds pretty, though I'd be fearful about the white getting dirty.

I use a quilt on the bed with matching pillow covers. It is easy to use, just pull up with the sheet and blanket.

Yes, the duvet has a cover. The cover keeps the cat hair off the duvet when I'm not using the wool blanket and it's easily washable. The pet blanket only covers about half the bed. The cover doesn't bunch up. I know there are some covers with internal ties (something you can DIY if you're crafty) that you can use to tie around each corner of the duvet to keep it from shifting around too much. My Mom just uses extra large diaper safety pins (are those even made anymore?) to pin each corner of the duvet to the cover.

Everything collects cat fur.  At least in my house!

A quilt is another option I must consider.  I need something warm for the winter though.  Ruby (and I) get cold.

I've been reading about clips and ties to keep the duvet from moving around.  There's good and bad reviews for them all.  Your Mom's idea of the safety diaper pins sounds good too.  I haven't seen those diaper pins in years - not since my sister was a baby!

We have a king-sized bed and each have our own (oversized) goose-down duvet for winter use and light-weight polyester-filled ones for warmer weather. That way nobody's stealing the covers. :lol3: We use the covers rather than flat sheets and have never had a problem with bunching. I keep a folded and tucked-in fleece blanket at the foot of my side of the bed, which does double duty. It keeps the duvet from sliding and makes a terrific cat bed.

I have a duvet cover that I had made out of some fabric I bought a few years ago, but the fabric is heavy, so usually only use that in the winter. I have a purple & white comforter that has been on my bed this winter w/ an electric blanket underneath.

I have a quilt for summer, & would like to get another one. I like to change it up every few months, or season. I haven't put the heavier duvet cover on the bed this year, because I'd have to change the bed skirt, & that is just a pain! So I have kept the purple & white on this winter. As soon as it warms up enough, I will switch to the quilt.

Do you use the same covers for both seasons, or do you have 2, or rather 4, covers?

Good idea to use the fleece blanket as a cat bed.  That wouldn't work for me, though, as Ruby doesn't sleep at the foot of the bed, she crawls under the covers with me!

Hmm... never thought about having to change the bed skirt.  But I do like the idea of having a different covering for different seasons.
And after reading all the replies, I think I've added a quilt to my possible bedding solution.

Yea, I had a cream one, so had to get a white one for the purple & white.  The white works w/ my quilt too, so was just easier to leave it on. The heavier duvet cover is the one that goes w/ the cream one.

Yes I use a duvet cover, it is a nice Egyptian cotton cover. Bunching up never seems to be an issue
