my ~5 year old is loosing her hair. it' most around her head. she loves to clean herself, but i have never seen her scratch her head in the spots where she is balding. I have been noticing the spots getting bigger over the past week. she has tested negative for ringworm and is on 2 flea medications-b/c the vet thought she was allergic to fleas.

there seem to be some blood marks in the spots (it's not flea dirt), so it seems self inflicted.

Do you all have any ideas?

she loves to drink water, so i was thinking she might have to be tested for diabetes?

we adopted her ,from the streets, just about 1.5 months ago, and she just developed this problem.

overall her behavior is still very sweet and calm-does not seem stressed.

i would love any advice-she's been to the vet 3 times already, but i'll take her in again mid week-if the bald spots keep growing.

thanks so much,

Johanna

It could be a food allergy or sensitivity. What are you feeding your cat?

we recently changed her food after noting the initial bald spots. her new food is: Nature's Goodness Grainfree Whitefish & Salmon with Olive Oil.

we only feed her dry food.

Fish is a common allergen for cats. I would suggest trying a different protein and seeing if that helps. Poor thing!

Try a diifferent food. A limited ingredient diet often helps cats with food allergies and sensitivies. Here's a list of some limited ingredient dry foods that also have canned varieties: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/307862/dry-cat-foods-with-only-one-protein It takes awhile to figure out what a cat is senitive to. Sometimes it's a particular protein or grains or some filler junk. In soeme tcats, it's dry food in general that causes allergy symptoms like balding and itchiness.

Seafood is best limited to once in awhile in meals in general. It's hard to do with dry food so feed a meat based food if you can and limit the seafood to the occasional canned food meal or a little bt of dry.

Did the vet absolutely rule out ringworm infections or thyroid gland problems? If so, then it must be either a food allergy or stress.

I still can't tell whether this is self inflicted or just more (un)natural hairloss....the scabs with blood tell me that it seems like she is scratching herself.

Do you all recommend a cone around her head so that she can not "over groom" herself?

i think i need to take her to the vet again....

her hole leg is now bare-she must be so uncomfortable.
