Hello,

I have a four-year-old tabby. Every now and then she has a habit of peeing and pooping outside of the litter box. She has bladder stones, but the vet says that it is not something that requires immediate surgery. So we are keeping her stable by having urinary care food (Hill's Prescription Diet CD) and plan for later surgery during her yearly checkup in November.

This morning I wake up and there is poop (solid) on both floors of the house. Just now she jumped up on the couch as I was laying on it, and proceeded to pee on it.

I am getting quite frustrated because I can't seem to figure out why she is doing this. We have two litter boxes (one in the basement, one upstairs) and she does use both. She seems to have an anxiety issue because when we put up our Christmas tree, she proceeded to pee on me twice in a row the first two days the tree was up. I am not sure if she is anxious about something — what that is, I do not know. All I know is that this peeing and pooping outside of the litterbox is a head-scratcher.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Brian

One thing I should point out is that yesterday I cleaned the house from top to bottom, and thus the "clean" smells are strong. Is it possible that these Arm and Hammer and Pine-Sol smells are too much for cats?

Be sure to clean the spots with enzymatic cleaner.  Also, be sure she has 2 litter boxes, if not more.  Then, find a new vet who will actually treat the problem and not put it off.

Nature's Miracle for preventing re-offenders.  Bleach diluted with water for boxes I keep mine in washroom works great. Natures Miracle especially useful for fabrics/carpets/dilute for floors as well.  Sorry to hear about your cat I'm sure others will share more info with you ~

Please don't use Pine Sol
Pine Sol and other cleaners that contain phenols are extremely toxic to cats. Even if you follow the directions and dilute the product and thoroughly rinse and dry the surfaces afterwards, there is still a risk of your cat ingesting lingering reisude (walking across the surface and then washing paws, etc).

WOW! Thank you; I did not know that. Good lord. Out into the trash went that.

I am beginning to think that the collection of new smells from the cleaners were too much for her nostrils. Perhaps she was trying to re-mark her territory? Has anyone heard of this happening?

Could be, if she's the anxious or territorial type. Does she have a pattern as to where she goes, like by windows and doors?

No real pattern. Just ... on the floor.

It appears that it is related to the clean smells, because she hasn't done anything like this in two days. I guess it must have just covered up the scents to which she is used. I'll monitor it, though.

Avoid using cleaning products with ammonia too then, don't want her to think your entire house is game for peeing.
