Kitten keeps stepping in his own poop. Any hints?

I've never met a clumsier cat!

Our 14 week old kitten, a male Siamese mix has been having embarrassing bathroom accidents. In his fervent attempts to cover his waste, he spins around and eventually, almost without fail, steps in it, jumps out of the box and kicks it everywhere before tracking it into the rest of the apartment.

Rest assured, I clean out his litter box constantly all day. When he goes, there's no other land mines to worry about.

I thought maybe it was from having diarrhea after getting wormed. But that cleared up and it was still happening. We recently got him a larger litter box, thinking maybe he was just struggling to turn around. But it is still happening! New litter, same thing.

We love the guy, and I know he isn't doing it on purpose. But he doesn't seem to bothered by it, either, which is worrisome for our carpets, not to mention the bed.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is it something he'll grow out of, or is something wrong with how the litter box is set up? Can I train him not to?

Furthermore, any tips for how to get it from tracking into the apartment from our bathroom? The current setup is a HUGE top-entry box which he has no problems with (he's not stepping in it when he jumps out, I checked), a litter mat (which has done virtually nothing to stop tracking of any kind), and a towel which seems the best at capturing litter and stray waste. But I'm not sure what else to do other than follow him to the bathroom each time and then rinse off his feet (thankfully he loves water and the bathtub!). But the horrors of what happens when I'm asleep! Help!

The good news is that these accidents will become less and less frequent as he outgrows his kitten clumsiness. Most young kittens are messy, so you feel like you're constantly cleaning up after them. The fact that he's trying to cover his waste is a good sign that he'll develop more pristine litter box habits.

The floors of the kitten rooms at the shelter are a constant mess, so we keep a spray bottle of water and vinegar and paper towels handy for spot cleaning, but still end up mopping or steam cleaning the floors on a daily basis. Very messy little paws are wiped with a Kleenex and warm water, though most of the time it isn't necessary.

When our last cat was a kitten, I kept inexpensive rag rugs around his litter box that could be soaked and then thrown in the washer.

I would follow and wash paws. I also put mine in the litter box at meal times so she still poos and wees just after meal time.  Mine hated water so she stopped stepping in poo, very quickly. I also had success with place the litter box so no sides were against the wall, so she could exit  or step out without stepping in poo

He is probably pooing them walking in it as he try to get out the hole in the box. Maybe take the lid off until has mastered not stepping in poo then put it back on.

I thought this was what was happening, that he was awkward getting put of the hole but I've watched him and its the same problem with the open litterbox. While he's turning he puts a paw in it firmly.
I may try and take the lid off and see what happens.
It's encouraging to know he will probably outgrow it. He loves taking baths, I just hope he'll learn to take them right when accidents happen.
I guess he'll just take longer than any of our cats growing up, but we will be patient. Thanks, guys!
