Is there anything which can be done to stop these wretched video ads?

They auto play and make the browser go incredibly slow and you have to get rid of them on every page as you go. The option never to show video ads is ignored.

They really are a waste of space and an irritant beyond reason. At least with a static ad, you only take the hit to download the content and then it sits there and you can ignore it. But with a video ad, it sits there and flickers and slows down your whole browser so you can't leave a tab open with this site and you have to shut down the video ads for every page.

Video ads are a real detraction from the quality of this site.

Thank you for your feedback!

I make a point of not having any auto-play video ads on the site. We filter those out with the networks we work with. Unless you interact with an ad, by clicking or hovering over it, it should not be playing at all.

If you are getting an auto-play ad, please report the specific ad here or to me. It's possible that one slipped past the filters but I need to know exactly which one. A screenshot and the URL the ad links to would be perfect.

I do apologize for the obtrusive ad. I've just reported this to our tech support people who should be able to track down the offending campaign and filter it out. If you see any other auto-play ads please let me know.

Thank you for the detailed report. Much appreciated!

Anne, is there nothing which can be done about these?

After yesterday's post, they all went away, but they are back with a vengeance. I am usually getting 2 video ads on the one page and often it is exactly the same ad. They are slowing my computer to a crawl, to the extent that sometimes it is really difficult to shut the videos down.

Let me tell you, I have measured the data these ads are taking. It is about 50MB/hour. Which means that if I leave one of your pages open for a 20 hours, it consumes 1GB and if I do this for 30 days, it consumes my month's data allowance. This really is excessive beyond reason.

Hopefully, this one is sorted now. I have a had a few days without these video ads, my browser is running freely and everything is running fine.

Sorry, no time nor patience to read the preceding postings about the video ads.  Frankly, I am to the point that it feels like I'm trying to seriously read the newspaper while in a waiting room, and some stranger comes up and from out of view, and tears in half the page I am reading.  Imagine the frustration.  I don't mind the video ads normally, but this site's video advert keeps bumping my page down as I'm in the middle of reading something of acute interest to me.  It bumps my page down so far that I can no longer see the post I was reading.  It does this repeatedly, moments after I return to what I was reading.  I don't wish to at this moment, but I am sure there has to be a setting or hidden switch inside my browser where I could totally disable them.  I would rather not do that as I'm sure someone somewhere needs them functioning for profit or advertising reasons.  Please fix or tell me how to stop them from repositioning my scrolled page so the video frame is always in my face.

Sorry this is happening. It must be a rogue ad that slipped through the filters as we do not server auto-play video ads at all. I hate them as much as you do and wouldn't have them on the site.

If you can tell me which ad that is, I'll make sure it gets switched off. If you're on a desktop, the best way to identify the ad would be by right-clicking and choosing "copy link address", then pasting it here. Again, my apologies, this should not be happening.

Thank you, Anne.  I think this is one of those situations where the condition mysteriously ceases when you get your mechanic to examine it.  It must know that I'm lurking about trying to ID this "rogue" so it has gone into hiding. Sorry I didn't catch the name or theme of the ad video, as I was too or trying to really focus on the info I sought prior to making a purchase decision.  I will surely link the URL should it reappear on my next visit.

Where do you think?
These @#$& video ads are exactly why I use adblocker I really hate having to use it but these videos sometimes startle me so badly I am forced to use it to keep them away.

To tag onto this, in the last few days every time an ad starts auto playing my screen jumps to it. Which is really getting annoying since I usually keep my screen smaller and in the corner of my monitor (I know, personal fail of checking it between things at work so off in the corner of one monitor).  But today it is so bad I can't even read through a thread without it jumping three or four times to an ad that starts playing (or back and forth between the two ads if they start at the same time). It also is fighting me to scroll away from the ad.

It's only doing it on the desktop version. I use Chrome and it wasn't doing it before this week. It seems to be every ad that is playing. If it helps any.

Again, this definitely should not be happening! If you can tell me what the ad is for - best is to right-click and copy the link - then I'll get tech support to ban the ad right away. It's most certainly not the kind of ads we want here on TCS. Nothing pays enough to frustrate our valued members
