Hi folks--looking for some advice for something I've never seen before. Our 11 year old cat Daisy has been exhibiting some odd behavior tonight, and though I've had cats all my life, I've never seen anything remotely like this and am at a loss for what's going on or what to do next.

I'll preface this by saying Daisy is a very vocal cat normally, growling or hissing at you if something isn't done quite right (like getting up from the couch), but then she forgets in a second and is very loving. But she just cries once or twice and then stops. Tonight, she has been low-level growling with some crying for almost 4 hours.

At 6 PM tonight I carried her from the bedroom to the living room, and she started growling a little during the ride. This is normal. I set her on the couch and she continued growling--a low, nasal noise punctuated by cries every now and then. She jumped down and went to sit in a little basket on the floor. She's was there for three hours, sometimes sleeping for 15 minutes at a time before waking and resuming the growls/cries. Eventually she sat up, and I called her a few times. She got up and jumped on my lap, but continued the noises nonstop for about a half hour. If I moved my hand closer to her she could see, and would make louder noises. I moved her onto the couch and that change put her on another intense crying/growling jag.

Her mouth is sometimes slightly open. Her breathing is slightly rapid.

We found some yellowish poop about a foot from the litter box. Everything else is normal. Her symptoms seem like they align with some major gastric distress. I tried touching her lower body and lifting her tail, but she cried out to such a degree that I stopped. I couldn't necessarily feel anything or gauge her reaction.

It's now 10 PM. I'm wondering if it's best to let her sleep through the night and bring her to our vet at 8 AM when they open, or drive out to the 24 hour vet for bloodwork and x-rays. Obviously something is going on; my only concern is whether it's life threatening. If not, I'd rather let her sleep through the night and avoid a stressful 20 minute car ride.

She's an indoor/outdoor cat and was outside today. She was fine this morning and went outside around mid-morning. At first I wondered if she was attacked or had a puncture wound, but now I think it is more digestive.

Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone out there? I'm so worried about her but don't want to totally stress her out with an extended drive and trip to the vet. Cats don't like that even when they're feeling great!

Well, it's now 4 AM east coast time, so I am sure you have either decided to go to the emergency vet or you have gone to sleep and will get up early and take her to your vet.  It sounds like something that definitely should be checked by a vet, and 8 AM should be early enough.  It definitely sounds like she has abdominal pain, which might be digestive but could also be an internal injury.  If there are no marks on her, she still could have been grazed by a car, grabbed by a dog but without making puncture wounds, or she could have hurt her back, ribs or tummy falling from a tree, jumping a fence, any number of things.  Hopefully you can both sleep through the night and get to the vet in the morning.  Maybe she will feel better by then, but you should still get her checked out.  Let us know what you find out.
