Well that's interesting - I hadn't even heard about UP canned for cats and I'd be among the first to know. It's not even on the Instinct web site yet.

Comparing ingredients b/t UP canned chicken and Instinct's 95% chicken/turkey, the ingredients don't look that different. Would have to see the GA and calculate the DMB to see if UP is indeed higher in protein.

Thanks for posting. :)

Thanks so much for posting this! So glad this is a thing, our kitties LOVE the UP kibble, but I'm just not sure here how this is significantly different than the regular instinct canned food. As @LisaMarie12 said, maybe the GA will be better? Also a little disappointed they didn't go with a no veggie option to differentiate. Guess we'll see!

Let's look at the ingredients lists for both

Ultimate Protein chicken  (Chewy price $22.68 for twelve 5.5 ounce cans-  $1.89 per can/ .34 cents per ounce)

Chicken, turkey, chicken liver, chicken broth, ground flaxseed, montmorillonite clay, eggs, peas, carrots, lecithin, dried kelp, potassium chloride, salt, minerals (zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, sodium selenite, cobalt proteinate, potassium iodide), vitamins (vitamin e supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, vitamin a supplement, biotin, vitamin d3 supplement, vitamin b12 supplement, folic acid), taurine, choline chloride, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, artichokes, cranberries, pumpkin, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale, parsley

The standard NVI chicken (Chewy price  $21.55 for twelve 5.5 ounce cans- $1.80 per can/ .33 cents per ounce)

Chicken, turkey, chicken broth, chicken liver, ground flaxseed, montmorillonite clay, eggs, peas, carrots, lecithin, vitamins (choline chloride, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, vitamin E supplement, niacin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin A supplement, thiamine mononitrate, biotin, riboflavin supplement, d-calciumpantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid), dried kelp, potassium chloride, tricalcium phosphate, salt, taurine, minerals (zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, sodium selenite, ethylenediamine dihydriodide), artichokes, cranberries, pumpkin, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale, parsley

The UP has chicken liver ahead of chicken broth- the standard is the opposite. The UP has dried kelp along with potassium chloride, salt and minerals before the vitamins. The standard does not. They are after the vitamins. They both have the same veggies. They are pretty much the same ingredients with some shift in order. I'm not impressed really. I get the standard NVI chicken through my S&S from Amazon. I doubt this will change.

looking at the ingredients--it has eggs added to it; possibly to increase the protein level?

NEVERMIND>...I never knew the regular one contained eggs also..

sorry, I do not feed chicken to my guy....

should keep my mouth shut...

Yup, good comparison. I agree with you, may as well just stick with the original. :)

I never noticed the eggs in the standard NVI either. Mine like it but prefer the LID turkey. That is the favorite from NVI .

No you shouldn't

My Molly likes LID turkey also. I couldn't believe though my indy retailer raised the price of LID turkey 5.5 oz to $2.70 a can! I just checked Chewy and a case of 5.5 oz / 12 cans works out to be about $1.91 a can, much better than $2.70!! I must be nuts to be paying retail. I try to support my local indy stores but I'm the one losing out here, it's just getting ridiculously expensive.

And $3.20 for LID rabbit, 5.5 oz, is what my local indy is now charging, up from $2.90!! :(

From NV Customer Service:

Thank you for writing!

Both our Instinct Original Cans and our Instinct Ultimate Protein Cans use the same formula.  Our current Instinct Original Cans are already protein packed, with 95% meat and liver, and they deliver on Instinct Ultimate Protein’s nutritional attributes.

Our Marketing Team is in the process of updating our website to include our new Instinct Ultimate Protein Cans.  In the meantime, you can view the nutritional information for our Instinct Original Chicken Cans at www.instinctpetfood.com/product/instinct-grain-free-canned-cat-food-chicken (just scroll down and click on the nutrients tab), it’s exactly the same as the nutritional information for our new Instinct Ultimate Protein Chicken Cans.

Thanks for supporting our products!

Still a fan of the company but similar problem to the UP kibble, it's not differentiated/marketed well. What's the point if it's the same or similar but costs more? The UP kibble was different than instinct at least.

That's what I'm thinking. They flat out told you that the foods are the same. I guess that they are hoping that most consumers aren't going to read the labels like we do.

They very well could be the same ingredients, but the percentages of each or at least some is probably different. Would like to know the difference in protein between the two though. I'm happy with canned NVI as is, and really am not looking to increase the cost of feeding two cats, so I'm likely not in the demography they're looking for, single Manhattan yuppie, lol.
