Hello everyone! Decided to finally make a post about one of our kitties who has been having some weird issues for a while. Her name is Zoey and she is about 2 and a half years old. Her issues began when she was a kitten and we rescued her from a "rescue" that had saved her from a kill shelter. When we brought her home she was around 8 weeks old, and sick as a dog (excuse the pun!) She was thin as a rail, her fur was greasy on her chest and near her tail, and she had very watery diarrhea. We nursed her back to health and she eventually came around and began acting like a normal kitten. Fast forward a few months and she was I think nearly a year old when one day all of a sudden she was showing no interest in eating. She was otherwise healthy, though. 2 days later she was lying on our bed from sunrise to sunset without moving and her ears and head were as hot as an iron. We rushed her to the vet and she had a fever of about 105. We couldn't believe it and had no idea where she got sick from (we have 5 other cats and none of them was or got sick even after she was). They gave her a steroid and fluids and said it may have been a virus or something. I figured I should mention that her disinterest in food was somewhat normal as some nights she would act almost afraid when she began eating, and would end up not eating anything. This behavior would sporadically happen on and off, and nothing particular brought it on.

Fast forward again to today and she is acting up with her disinterest in food again. I feel like it started when we had switched the flavor (not brand) of their wet food, and she ate it for a night or two and now will not eat. She acts completely normal otherwise; in fact, she gets the most excited for dinner time. She runs around when we're setting their bowls down and cries and cries acting like she is starving. Then, we set the food down, and she sniffs it and runs away like she is afraid to eat. We have never hit her or abused her in her entire life, I have no idea why she acts like this. We thought maybe it was her jingly collar hitting the side of the metal bowl, so we took it off but she still will not eat. We have switched them to just eating their dry food (which hasn't changed since they were kittens) to see if she would maybe eat just that. Nope! I just don't understand..she is the sweetest cat and so friendly, always looking for pets and has the sweetest little meow. We're really getting concerned because even though she is long haired, we can feel that she is very skinny. Also, the greasiness of her fur has never gone away. We have tried brushing her and bathing her and it goes right back to being greasy. The wet food we feed is Friskies Poultry Platter and the dry food is Simply Nourish Source Adult Chicken and Turkey recipe. We have tried the expensive wet food; grain free, real meat, etc. but then absolutely none of them would eat for weeks and a couple of the other cats began getting skinny as well. I also figured I would mention that they have been eating in the basement for a few months now but just the other day we decided to move their feeding area to the upstairs office as in the basement is where all their litter boxes are and we thought that may be bothering them (when we switched the flavor recently NONE of them would eat it after a few days and thought changing the place that they eat might encourage the rest of them to eat the different flavor, too).

I thought I may get some opinions on others that may have experienced something like this? We are going to bring her to the vet if she doesn't begin eating after we get their old flavor, but I am really thinking this may be a behavioral thing. She is a pretty skittish cat in general, so her acting afraid when eating if we even move the slightest bit makes me think that she is just scared to eat. I have no idea why she has been exhibiting this behavior for so long and at such random times. I understand that right now she may be feeling a little out of sorts because we moved their eating area, but even before we switched the flavor she just would not eat. We sit and watch them and she would sniff it and either lay down away from it and watch the others eat or run away. The others have never attacked her during dinner time, either. Just feeling very stumped on this one.

How long has it been since your cat has eaten? If it has been more than 48 this is already a medical emergency and you really have to start force feeding her and/or take her to a vet. Please see this article for more information: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/why-has-my-cat-stopped-eating-and-is-it-dangerous

In short: unlike humans and most other mammals, cats truly cannot go long without food before beginning to experience grave medical consequences, notably fatty liver disease. This can actually begin within just 24 hours of the cat last having eaten. Once the cat has this (especially at an advanced stage) it is usually expensive and time consuming to treat- prevention, or barring that at least a vet visit ASAP- is much better.

At this point your most pressing concern is not why your cat won't eat but quite simply getting her to eat absolutely ASAP.  Once this crisis is over, you can worry about the rest. The first thing I'd do is immediately get her the flavor of food she was last actually eating, but if she won't go for that, again, you need to take her to the vet and/or force feed her. You really can't wait any longer hoping for this to just resolve.

Thank you for the reply. She has eaten since I posted, albeit quite little. What I've found is that she will eat a bite when we first put it down and throughout the evening goes back and eats more and more from each bowl as none of the other cats ever finish their food in one go, either. So I am happy to see that she is eating, but we plan to bring her to the vet for a full evaluation just in case it is not only behavioral. She definitely does not eat as much as we would like her to. Tomorrow we will be going to PetSmart to get her a couple different flavors we have had in the past to see which might be her favorite, hoping that will get her to eat a bit more.
