Okay so where i lived before I never had a problem getting a vet appointment right away if I needed it. There were lots of vets, shelters and human societies. Where I am now, not so much. My cat is behaving very strangely. She is a very sweet and social little animal, young and very healthy. I noticed once or twice yesterday that she seemed like maybe she was going to throw-up a hair ball she made this lips smacking noise that she does just before puking, but didn't throw-up. I counted myself lucky and thought nothing of it.

Then I noticed her doing it again last night. This morning she started hiding and when I came home today she didn't greet me at the door or do any of her usual behaviors. I lured her out very briefly with some treats, but then she hid again. I lure her out with a toy, and got her to sit in my lap while I tried to figure out what was going on. I got a look at her and noticed she was salivating a lot, and also kind of grubby which is definitely unusual as she is very good about keeping her self clean. Still she I let her sit in my lap, she got comfortable and after we'd been sitting for two or three minutes she tensed all over like maybe she was going to sneeze or something, squeaked shook her head to shake away the drool and hid again.

This time I got to see her hiding place and offered her some treats. The treats lured her out, but then she decided not to eat them. Sometimes I give her a little bit of cheese or yogurt if I am getting those foods for myself. Yesterday she seemed interested in having some cheese, but when I put down a few pieces of it for her she sniffed and walked away. I'm wondering now if this wasn't the start of whatever is going on with her.

I have a vet appointment for Friday, but I don't think I should wait that long. Has anyone ever had a cat with this kind of symptom or behavior any ideas about what might be going on?

I'm afraid I don't have experience with these symptoms, but I would err on the side of caution and get her to a vet sooner just in case she's ingested something toxic. Hopefully she's just coming down with a URI, though!

The lip smacking and hyper salivating are due to nausea. The question is, why is she nauseated? Could be any number of things from eating a foreign body to pancreatitis to ingesting something toxic.

She needs to see a vet. Is there an emergency clinic in your area? If not, I would be at the vet with her first thing in the morning, appointment or not. Your cat is sick and needs medical attention (I know you know this.) If this vet refuses to see you, I would go to the next closest vet available.

I managed to get a hold of a friend who is a vet. She's taken care of my cats before. She asked me some questions walked me through a few things to check Tiny for. Then  had me try and get her to eat some wet food. Tiny did eat. As long as she is eating, drinking, eliminating she thinks I may as well wait.  For the moment I'm going to keep communicating with my vet friend (she lives over four hours a way and can't just come and check on her) and keep an eye on my cat. I work part time and my roommate is here during the day so we can keep her supervised. If anything changes its straight to emergency, but for the moment at least I think I will just wait for my Friday appointment.

HI there! My kitties go through this from time to time.  Mary needs help digesting her hairballs and if I don't give her the medicine, she acts the way your kitty is minus the hiding.  The others, who are younger than Mary do hide.  It always ends up being something they ate.  One ate the insides of a mouse toy that he ripped apart.  He was that way for 2 days until he threw up what he ate.   I have also had one act this way from mouth pain, which ended up being a cut on her tongue.  She would hide, salivate and lick her lips a lot.   And another acted this way from stomach acid that the vet said was caused by an allergic reaction to food..   Update after your appt!   :)

Update- so Tiny refused to eat anything when I got up this morning and I was just too worried so I took her to the urgent pet vet for treatment. Vet had a look and found a scrapped spot on the tip of her tongue. She prescribe some pain meds so Tiny could eat and drink normally, and that the spot should heal in a bit. So the vet is thinking she may have gotten into some chemicals or something. I let her outside occasionally for like 30 minutes at a time.

We come home and then I notice that one of the other cats has the same red spot on their nose. My roommate and I check for a scraped spot on his tongue and he doesn't have that. And now my roommates other cat who just came in from outside has one too. So I do some more digging and it turns out that the red spot might be an allergic reaction that may or may not be related to the sore spot on the Tiny One's tongue.

The reaction could be a number of things, but I'm thinking they are getting into something outside. We did change their dishes from stainless steel to plastic and cats do sometimes have allergic reactions to plastics so that could be it as well. If you notice a red damp wound on your cats nose or lip it may be some type of allergy. Still not sure if the tongue is related or a coincidence.  Also if its an allergic reaction what I was thinking was saliva might have been a runny nose, not sure yet.

Allergic reaction also wouldn't account for the not eating. I guess we'll have to see if the other two cats eat since they now have the red spot on their noses.
