HELP!

I adopted 9 month old Gus three weeks ago. He had explosive diarrhea when I brought him home, but the shelter manager said it was from a chewable vitamin he had been given for runny eyes. She said they had stopped the vitamin and that his stools would be back to normal soon.

Well, after 5 days at home and so much diarrhea all over the place, I couldn't take it anymore. Kitty was obviously ill, with red, swollen eyes (he is all white), a horribly inflamed bottom, and lethargy. He was eating just fine (Hills Science dry food for digestion). I took him to the vet, where he stayed for about 17 days and was given a full two weeks of Metronidazole. The receptionist called me yesterday saying his stools were normal and solid. They sent us home with Hills Science wet food. Well, he's been home for just a few hours and the diarrhea is back. Not explosive, but his stools are runny. Should I expect this? They said he was just suffering from "digestive upset". I have a feeling I adopted an unwell kitten and I am heartbroken. He is the sweetest, most playful little guy.

I'd call the vet and tell them this and ask what they think and whether this is how he was when there too.  Is the food you were sent home with the same as the food they were feeding him?

Ugh!  I am so sorry!!  I would recommend a second opinion and tests for parasites as well as the PCR diarrhea panel to make sure you're not dealing with some weird parasite that's not picked up on the in-house fecal float.  Also, ask for a food for gastro problems or try a limited ingredient diet.

I am almost suspecting a food allergy, since I noticed when I brought him home yesterday that he has licked away a noticeable amount of fur near his back leg/on his belly. The vet had been giving him Hill Science wet food and sent me home with a bunch of cans so that's what I've given him. Before I ever took him to the vet he had been eating Authority dry kitten food.

Probiotics! Here's a list of human ones you can give to cats and kittens mixed in their wet food. It saved me when my kittens were little and had tummy issues from food

I would look at giving him a limited ingredient food it sounds like maybe he has a food intolerance issue. Science Diet IMO isn't good food, but feeding wet food is really important. Something like Merrick's limited ingredient wet food or Nature's Variety is a good option. Simple food that isn't loaded with fillers cats don't need.

I would also try a limited ingredient diet..something like Natures Variety..

The probiotic I use is Proviable. It is much cheaper on Chewy.com.....

Keep in touch with the Vet.

Try something without chicken...

I would not give any milk at all. Cats are lactose intolerant. If you want to give some milk, Goats milk is good.
