Most of you know there's a bunch of ferals in my complex and my neighbor and I have successfully trapped 5 of them with the help of an older woman from a local organization last October including Prego
Well ........... she is back! And she set the trap today in the dirt yard next door and we got SNOWFLAKE!! Snowflake is Prego's daughter (I believe) she is the siamese looking one with the white spot on her chin..

That picture is a few months old.. they have all grown up now and the two b&w cats in this pic were also trapped last October. We still havent got the little tortie/calico mix and I think *2* other cats around here.

I am so excited.. I was worried she would start having babies and now she will be spayed!!

Thanks guys!! I am pretty sure she is a girl but I guess we'll find out for sure in a few days. She should be returned Sunday if all goes well w/tests etc.
I'm really surprised all 5 (now 6) of these cats are female! Where the heck are the males hiding?? There's one called Tux that I kinda think is a male but he only comes around every few days or once a week.

Sicycat...since you have done such a good job of spaying...maybe the guys aren't coming around anymore.

That actually doesn't surprise me at all! Saw a cat special on PBS that talked about how studies have shown that colonies of barn cats are very similar to lion prides. Lion prides consist mainly of females and their young with perhaps an alpha male. The females do the majority of the hunting and share the care of the young. Once males are old enough, they are driven out of the pride to form bachelor groups. If you leave a feral cat colony alone, similar things will happen. (Lions and domestic cats are the only ones to do this - tigers and others don't behave the same).

I've noticed in my colony over the years that only neutered males will stick around. If you can't TNR them by the time they are about a year old, chances are they will wander off. Perhaps they will return at a later time, but if left unneutered, they will come and go. Unneutered females on the other hand will form their own group and care for each other within a colony. I caught an entire colony of females one summer and had them TNR'd. Individually they had escaped me, but as a group, they were calmer and easier to trap.

Congratulations on helping another baby girl!!

Wow!! Thanks for the interesting tidbit! It totally makes sense. All the females hang out together, I see them sleep together and even groom each other... its so cute!! (The ones that I know for sure are littermates) And even though they are spayed they still pretty much stick together. That also explains why I only see Tux like once a week.. I bet he is male!

I think all of the males are at my house! In all of my years TNRing in my neighborhood, I have NEVER caught a female!!! My colony is exclusively male, though there is a neighbor's spayed female cat (a gorgeous long haired calico) who hangs out every day with my boys.

There was one beautiful torti female who was starting to hang out in my yard about a year or two ago who was killed by a car before I managed to trap her. While trying to trap her I caught a HUGE orange male instead (Caruso).

Wow how strange!! All of my guys look either siamese, siamese/tortie.. tortie or b&w. I have never seen any other kind of cat. And I know all torties are female. It would feel good to catch at least one male!

From what I've known of "wild" colonies, especially in the country, the males don't stick around. It becomes like a rooster in the henhouse thing, there can be all females around, but only one male, or they fight and run each other off. Some males will sleep all day and only slip around at night in search of food.
