Hi All,

I saw some hair missing on my tabby so I took a picture, it look slike a rash or something rubbed on it, I also found on his otherside the samething but smaller and hair also missing and that side is sticky hair, not skin.  I gave him his flea med to make sure thats not the issue, but it will take a few days meantime it's looking a little red so wondering if I should take him in or not. He come with our house and is a sweet boy and we keep him inside most of the time, but he is very fearful of people he doesn't know and a bit wild, so taking him to the vet can be a crazy event..

I was thinking maybe a insect bite also, but then I saw it on his other side, so maybe his skin was sticky and he over cleaned that area? I am keeping an eye on it to see if it grows, but yes we do have other cats outdoor, he likes the people that lives 3 houses down from me older couple and he like to hang out on there patio while they eat ;)

I'm not sure about the over grooming. I feel like if it were that, the skin surrounding the area, that we can see is white, would be pink too, from all the licking.

Angel would do that to his tummy sometimes, & it would be a more thinned out hair, & pink in the whole area from the tongue. That's what makes me think maybe an insect bite or something. Even if he did it biting at the area, he would have been licking there too & would look more like I described.

Lets see if we can get some help. mentioning @Margd  for some more input.

Hard to tell in the pic, it doesn't appear to be typical ringworm but that's always a possibility.

In ringworm there wouldn't normally be some strands of fur still there at the bald spot, and often times you will see tiny black dots too, but not always.

Although there are so many strains of ringworm so it's definitely possible.

I say keep an eye on it and if it doesn't start healing very soon and growing new fur or another spot pops up I would definitely be taking him in to see the vet.

They know how to handle a fearful/unsocial cat.

It's the getting him in to a carrier that would be the hardest part.

Pillowcases work great for that.

I thought about ringworm too, but wasn't sure how defined the ring should be. I think I'd schedule a vet visit anyway, just in case, & better safe than sorry.  Especially because ringworm is contagious.

Have you tried calming treats? Maybe that would help, as well as some feliway/ or comfort zone spray. It says to spray the carrier 30 minutes before.

Sorry I did not reply sooner, I was kind of busy with my guy.

Ringworm was the first thing that came into my head. I am not an advisor, but just trying to be helpful. Catwoman707 is an advisor. I trust her opinion immensely.

I have used Feliway with success. I honestly did not feel it was helping my guy at first, but when I ran out of it, I noticed he was more skittish. Since that time, I swear by it.

Yes, you would spray the inside of the carrier about 20-30 minutes before putting your kitty in there. I line the hard carrier with a towel and spray the inside. The towel will absorb and hold much of the scent.

I have never tried calming treats, but it is definitely worth a shot. My guy did not like them, so I could not give him any.

Good Luck and please keep us updated..

I could be wrong, but the last time I saw something like this it wasn't on a cat. I used to volunteer at a day care facility, and that looks like lice. Do cats get lice? You might want to check. If they do, you want to wash everything

I think I see some raised edges on it, so ringworm is a very likely possibility. If so, it may still be forming up. And I don't know if cats get lice. But lice can carry the fungus too. But I think that lice prefer human hosts.

A bit of info on lice.

Cats can get lice, not common, and mostly found on debilitated/unhealthy/malnourished type of cats.

I have dealt with lice several times, as we all know having a cat rescue group means I see and get some of the worst out there.

Not like human lice thankfully! Pretty easy to get rid of.

Just checking in, have you taken him to the vet to have it checked out yet?  To find out exactly what it is & to get medication for it,etc...

You're welcome. I'm glad it seems to be getting better. Have you been putting peroxide on it? It would be a good idea.
