Smelly fish oil as a food topper?

So I've been trying to get my IBD Molly to eat Instinct LID canned rabbit with little luck. Once in awhile she'll take a few bites but mainly Mikey eats it.

I've tried various freeze dried toppers, usually to no avail, she'll eat a few bites or just the surface of the rabbit with the topper.

I ended up getting a few samples of Nordic Naturals Omega 3 capsules. I talked with Molly's vet about adding Omega 3 oil to her food, see if that helps with inflammation, in addition to her med, b12 shots and probiotics.

When I opened the sample packet, she was very interested. I ended up drizzling some of the fish oil over the LID rabbit - and what do you know?  She wolfed down the food she normally refuses!!

I guess with the fish oil, which must be smelly, she thinks she's getting some fish in her diet - pretty nifty trick eh?

We'll see how this experiment works out, if it's just a one shot deal or if it works consistently. :)

Edit:  Just an fyi if anyone is thinking of trying this: fish oil can deplete vitamin E in a cats' diet so it's important to get the right amount, I'm waiting to hear back from our vet.

Sounds good, perhaps you can slowly phase out the fish oil until she eats the rabbit as is.

I notice my cats get bored with chicken, turkey etc and am introducing other animal proteins like beef, lamb & pork. Most take a little time to be fully accepted. At the moment rabbit is one of their favorites. Good luck.

That's awesome! My cats have the opposite reaction to fish oil. They look at me like I've poisoned their food if they even smell a hint of fish oil in it. When I first got them, I had to put some drops on their paws to get them to lick it up. But they both just ended up looking greasy, so I gave up.

When I have a food my cats don't love - [Primal in particular lately... they turn their nose up at certain bags. One bag of Turkey is delicious, the next bag is awful in their minds.] Anyway, I press toppers into the food, instead of just sprinkling them on top - so they kind of have to dig for them. Maybe that will work for Molly?

Thanks! Molly could use the fish oil since it has the potential to help with the inflammation in her gut.
So giving it to her on a regular basis is fine and actually cheaper for me than having to buy toppers all the time. :)
