Hi all,
I have a 5 month old kitten, she seems fine but the past few days I have noticed weird grinding noises coming from her mouth. It started last night, I thought she had picked up something hard off the ground it sounded like two teeth grinding together. Is she teething?

About 15 minutes into the noise I fed her wet food and after the noise disappeared. Then when I fed her tonight the noise came back again while she was eating? Should I take her to a vet? She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort but I'm worried.

Thanks in advance

Most cats go through teething periods between 8 weeks and 6 months, so it is possible she has some new teeth that are not aligned as she would like and she may be grinding them.  I have not encountered this in a healthy cat or kitten, although I've seen (well, HEARD it) it several times when kittens are ill.  Keep paying attention and see if it is just a phase that passes.  If she stops eating or has any other unusual signs, then get her checked by the vet.  If it's just teething, it should pass soon.  TW, often when kittens are teething and coming into their adult teeth, they go through periods of having very bad breath.  You might try smelling her breath when she hasn't jut been eating to see if it's any different than usual.

I agree about monitoring her closely. Could be a tooth/teeth issue, but could also be due to pain.

My Max has issues with pancreatitis and also has early onset arthritis. Teeth grinding is often the earliest sign to me that he is in pain. Appetite will still be good, litter box habits good, no vomiting/diarrhea, etc...no other symptoms. I have actually had him checked for TMJ twice and he also had a visit with the dental specialist in town, all this before I learned that the grinding was due to pain.

Seriously? This is worse than I thought. I have another cat who is 10 months old I she has never made that noise. I have only heard the grinding noise twice for a couple of minutes each time. Also when it happen she puts her paw up to her mouth, almost as if she's trying to get something out. I will see if it persists, as she won't let me look into her mouth.

I would take her to a vet, especially if you are noticing her acknowledging the noise. It sounds like she is in pain.
