Hello,

This may be a stupid question, but would it be better to get a cat or a kitten in a home with a bird?  We currently have a parakeet, and he does not come out of his cage.  The bird is located in the living room, so it would be hard to keep the cat out of there. We also have a rabbit and a dog. Any thoughts or advice is welcome.  We do not have  a cat yet.  I am researching and gathering information. Thanks!

Hi  have cats with birds, easy to raise a kitten with birds mine don't care if they're in cages or not adults now ;)  I actually got birds to keep the cats happy more nature for them. Of course you will be training your cat/kitten to be non-aggressive, the strong prey drive will still kick in for birds outside, but inside everyone is friends. Cockatiels finches lovebirds.

When they were kittens I would sit a circular bird cage on the floor with 2 finches and the cats would hug the cage lie on their backs watching the birds for hours ;)  or they would need to sit quietly refrain from touching a bird that I had on my lap but allowed to gently touch in time...(just for a few minutes) it's easy they learn to control themselves they new they needed to be calm to visit with the bird. OR they sit on stools inches away from birds in cages watching them eat bathe etc,  An older cat indoor only would be easier to adjust to a bird than and indoor outdoor cat. Kitten would be ideal pet pick for your situation.

Just a suggestion thats all I have no idea how long you've had your bird, or if it's your first, age etc. May or may not be able to fly even.....just suggestion. You can pick up butterfly net @ dollar store  then you can release your bird in any sealed room, it's great for them to fly stretch their wings etc it's much healthier happier for them. It's like taking a dog for a run, exercise. They will return to cage for food on their own.
I can help you if you'd like to do that.

A friend of mine has a cat and a parrot. I always thought that was a bad mix, but they get along. The cat is pretty mellow, and it's a large loft with high ceilings, so I suppose there's enough room for the both of them.
