Hello Everyone

I bought the sentry malt flavor toothpaste cleaning dental kit

yesterday .

Today I introduced the toothpaste to Lily and she licked it

I did manage to hold her by the neck scruff and with one hand

get the toothbrush on her gums...l second..

My cat is 9 months old but sitting above her does not work

having her in the chair does not work and getting behind her

with the tiny toothbrush...

I looked at the videos on line to try to do what they do

I have no idea what to try next other than wrap a towell loosely around her entire body, head out and try to hold her mouth one side open and with same hand try to brush with the tiny toothbrush...

Can anyone enlighten me how to accomplish this feat..

My cat is strong and  has big teeth front ones to be only 9 months old..and large claws..

The finger brush is a no no no with her..and it is clumsy and too big for a cat's mouth to me..and to Lily too..

Hi Sheri,

I will answer your PM, & this here, for others who may need help with this to see as well. I mentioned my video, but wasn't sure if you were able to find it on that thread.  Lily may struggle more, since she is being held by the scruff, but I know, you were just trying to figure out how to do it, but yea, I don't know how you would do it that way, because you need one hand to hold the mouth open, while the other does the brushing.  Because she is young, & squirmy, you may need Larry to hold her from behind, while you do the brushing. I also always made Angel lay down, so his feet wouldn't be so quick to get away. I have also maid him down on his side, so his feet were not under him, for that reason.  I would lay her down, w/ Larry behind her, holding around the front of her shoulders, so she can't get away, while you brush. As you will notice, I put Angel up on the washer, because it was a good height for me, & was kind of like a table at the vets. Also, with the hand that is holding her mouth open, you can use that forearm to sort of hold her down a bit. Hopefully you will get a better idea by watching my video.    Oh, I also wouldn't worry too much about her front fangs at all, those are not usually a problem, it's the teeth they chew with that need it more. Over the years, Angel had 2 extractions, 2 separate times. Both were each right in the middle of the bottom, one on each side. It's also almost impossible to get inside brushed, so just focus on getting in the cheek, to get the sides of upper, & lower, if you can. You have to try & be thorough, but quick, in, brush brush, & out on each section.

I hope it helps!

I never could find the video..I will be patient but since I can not get the inside of her teeth...just the outside

I wonder if I would be better financially and Lily too to continue to buy the pro den plaque off that is sprinkled daily on a cat or dogs food to work from the inside ...to help prevent tartar..

I found that online myself over a year ago...looking for anything to help with tooth tartar.. I have used it one year on Bro now daily but not been to the vet to ask him how his teeth look in comparision to last year when the vet flecked tartar off his teeth in front of us..with his finger..

I will ask the vet when we take Bro in March ...how much tartar he sees and that ought to tell me if that product has done the job or not..

Any thoughts from others who are using pro den plaque off in their pets food daily to  prevent tartar buildup?

thanks Kelly and everyone

Yes, I remember when you got that for Bro.  I put the video link there, but if you can't get it, let me try again.  The toothpaste last quite a while though, so really not priced too bad.  I tried to do it a couple of times a week, but once a week for sure.

OK, will try another link for it below, hope this one work for you.  OK, I just tried it, this one works.

Also forgot to mention,a little thing, but important to make them feel comfortable. You will notice, I let him finish swallowing between strokes, so he doesn't feel bombarded, I mean, think about if someone was trying to put something back in your mouth before you finished swallowing from the last. I think it makes a big difference in their cooperation as well, because it's easier for them.  Just common sense really.
Good luck!! You can do it!

My fiance and I always do it where one person holds the cat and the other does the brushing. Most of the time the cats are very good. The worst thing that's happened thus far is that Carrot bit down on my finger in the finger brush. This was painful, but he didn't break the skin or anything.

@Angels mommy  thank you for sharing the video. I have been trying to find it! Angel was so patient for tooth brushing. I don't think I could get either of mine to hold still that well. They're both whiners when it comes to any kind of grooming and have to be held for it.

Thank you. Yes, he was a sweet, special boy!  He was pretty docile, so that made it relatively easy. He liked to be brushed too. I would hold the brush in front of his face & he would brush each side of his face, back & forth. He would do it so hard, but I'm sure it felt good on those whiskers!  I think I have a video of that somewhere too. I need to find that one!
